Click here Cairns Regional Council e-news - Volume 31, 24 November 2017Christmas is coming to CairnsThe traditional lighting of the Cairns Esplanade Christmas Tree will be held on Friday 1 December from 5.30pm. Everyone is invited to join in this annual celebration that marks the start of the festive season in Cairns. The lights will be switched on at about 7.15pm by the four age winners of the Christmas e-card competition: Lin Ando (age 4), Neville Turi (6), Brea Wright (8) and Regan Cini (10). Entertainment by Bree and the Bopstars and Cuddles the Clown. Carols by CandlelightCairns Carols by Candlelight will take the stage at Fogarty Park on Sunday 10 December from 5.30pm. Featuring a host of local performers plus a special guest showcase. Bring a picnic blanket, the family and your singing voices for a full evening of festive entertainment. Food, drinks, battery-operated candles and other glow products available for purchase. Includes a fireworks finale at 8.30pm. Bin times to changeResidents are reminded to get in the habit of putting their household bins out early, in the lead-up to waste collection service improvements. Collection routes have been reviewed for the first time in seven years and will result in changes to collection times for both household waste and recycling. To ensure your bins aren't missed, please place them kerbside before 6am on collection day. Queen's Baton Relay routeThe Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) will travel through the Cairns region on 16-17 March 2018. The route is now available to view online. There will be community celebrations at Palm Cove, Munro Martin Parklands and Edmonton's Walker Road Sporting Complex. Residents are invited to line the streets during the relay to cheer on the 130 Batonbearers who will carry the Baton through Cairns. The Baton arrives in Australia on Christmas Eve. Pick up free mulchA mulched garden is a happy garden! Pick up domestic quantaties of mulch for free on 8-11 December from Cairns Regional Council's waste transfer stations. Cairns Alert is a localised notification system providing emergency advice via email and SMS before, during and after a disaster event. Sign up online now. Explore the Cairns Disaster DashboardLatest disaster advice and information is now just a click away, thanks to the Cairns Disaster Dashboard. The site will be a single point of reference for information and advice during a disaster event, providing information from Council, emergency services, utilities such as Ergon and Telstra, road status updates, and traffic and flood cams, the website will become the primary online disaster resource for residents. During an emergency, the dashboard will be updated in real time with road closures, power outages and notifications of shelters that may be opened. The Cairns Disaster Dashboard is available at disaster.cairns.qld.gov.au. Bookmark it now! Donate online to spread Christmas CheerThe Mayor's Christmas Cheer Appeal supports people in our community who are doing it tough at Christmas. Your donation will help to provide food hampers to families and senior members of our community who might otherwise go without. Donations big or small can be made securely via Council's website. Donations over $2 are tax deductible. Nominate a great citizenDo you know someone in our community who is worthy of recognition? Nominations are now open for the 2018 Cairns Region Australia Day Awards. The awards recognise outstanding achievement and contribution by residents of the Cairns region. There are seven award categories: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Cultural Award, Junior Cultural Award, Sportsperson of the Year, Junior Sportsperson of the Year, and Volunteer of the Year (open age). Nominations can be made online and must be received by 8 December 2017. Recycle batteries at librariesNot sure what to do with household batteries once they've done their job? Drop them off at any Cairns Libraries branch for recycling! Nearly a tonne of batteries have been recycled since the drop-off points were installed in February. Small household batteries up to and including laptop and power tool battery packs can be accepted. Larger batteries such as car and motorbike batteries can be dropped off for free at waste transfer stations. Family pantomime‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, creatures were stirring, including a mouse! When Santa's Naughty or Nice list goes missing it's up to a sassy girl, a beat boxing mouse and an Elf-B-I agent to help save Christmas. Tickets are now on sale for this year's Pantomime in the Parklands on Saturday 16 December. BYO blankets or chairs; bring a picnic or purchase at the venue. |
