Latest news from SLSNZ - October 2019 No Images? Click here LIFESAVING NEWS Patrol Season Begins! The start of the summer patrol season is just around the corner, with the first iconic red and yellow surf lifesaving flags being unfurled on Labour Weekend. We just wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of our Surf Lifeguards for their commitment and passion to making our beaches safe for the community. We, and millions of Kiwis, really appreciate it. We Train to Save Lives! Well done to everyone involved in two recent rescues which highlight the importance of Surf Lifeguards being fit, trained and ready every day of the year. On Saturday, October 12, seven surfers were rescued by Surf Lifeguards who were at Raglan Surf Life Saving Club as part of the annual Zespri IRB Development Camp. A large rip dragged a surfer out and spotters involved in the training saw him and a rescue was launched. A further six inexperienced surfers were also helped back to shore. The following day, on Sunday October 13, a group of instructors were teaching new Surf Lifeguards at Piha Surf Life Saving Club when someone was seen in the water who appeared to be in trouble. Surf Lifeguards rescued an unresponsive 28-year-old woman who was face down in the water behind Lion Rock. Well done to everyone involved - without you it could have been a very different Christmas for a number of families this year. Gisborne/Tairāwhiti Gisborne/Tairāwhiti Examiners and Instructors are trialing a new initiative for the 2019/20 season with the creation of a local Surf Lifeguard Award (SLA) Academy. Members from Ngāti Porou, Tolaga Bay, Wainui, Waikanae and Midway Surf Clubs are coming together as a collective for Patrol Support and Surf Life Guard Award training. More than 40 participants have attended the first two training sessions. XCEL Surf Stock has arrived and will be dispatched to all clubs. Any questions or issues with your club's order please contact Ben@exitsurf.com. Feel free to contact SLSNZ Media & Communications Manager Melanie Louden if you have any questions. Matt Warren's Leaving The Office, But He’s Not Leaving His Club Matt Warren’s time with Surf Life Saving NZ has been all about two things – the people and the cause. He has been a volunteer with the Paekakariki Surf Lifeguards club for 35 years and has worked for the charity for the past 11 years. At the end of September, Matt, pictured right with Chief Executive Officer Paul Dalton, walked out of the office for the final time – but he’ll still be keeping his feet in the sand. New President of SLSNZ SLSNZ’s newest President is Marilyn Moffatt who joined the Surf Lifesaving movement in 1971. She has been a member at a number of clubs and has held a variety of club, district and SLSNZ positions. Marilyn is experienced in marketing, managing business operations, relationship building and project management. Her career has covered positions such as Executive Director, Business Development Manager, Business Analyst, and Group Product Manager/Sales Manager. Congratulations on your appointment, Marilyn. “The 2019 AGM was also the swansong for our President Brian Velvin,” CEO Paul Dalton says. “Brian did a sterling job in his two years in the role and brought a huge amount of experience to the table during this time – having done just about every role possible in the movement over a very long career. And despite mumblings of retirement it will only be a matter of time before we seem him back helping again with another hat on!” Board Member Changes Congratulations and welcome to Phil Holden who has become an Independent Appointed Board Member for SLSNZ. Phil is a self-employed consultant who has held previous CEO roles with major organisations including Lion Foundation, NZ Rugby League and Greyhound Racing NZ. He has governance experience across the sports, tourism and the gaming sectors and is based in the Wairarapa. “At the AGM, Board stalwart Trevor Taylor stood down after having completed six years as one of our inaugural Independent Appointed Board members,” CEO Paul Dalton says. “Trevor set the bar very high for all future Independent Board members and will be sorely missed. Trevor’s wise counsel and wealth of experience has really contributed to our success over the last six years and he leaves behind a legacy to be proud of.” Call for Applications for the National Honours & Awards Committee - Eastern Region Representative The SLSNZ Board is now calling for Eastern Region applications for the 2020 National Honours & Awards Committee. The initiative kicked off on Breakfast TV with James Lloyd from Waihi Beach Lifeguard Service and the NZ Lottery Grants Board Lifeguard of the Year reinforcing our key safety message to the public "Choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red & yellow flags." We are stoked that our friends at TSB have renewed their partnership with SLSNZ for another 3 years! The partnership is invaluable with TSB helping SLS to tell our story and raise awareness around important safety messaging such as the 3Rs rip safety campaign (RELAX & float, RAISE your hand and RIDE the rip to survive a rip), in addition to providing $100, 000 in TSB Club Grants for essential maintenance and rescue equipment. As Paul Dalton, CEO of SLSNZ says, “We are immensely grateful for the support from TSB and look forward to what the next three years will bring.” Pictured: Donna Cooper (TSB Chief Executive) & Paul Dalton (SLSNZ Chief Executive) New Flag Stand Covers for all SLSNZ Clubs - Thanks to TSB!
