Economically its neighbours such as Vietnam and Thailand have left it in their wake, yet culturally, Laos is one of the region’s most exciting and unspoilt countries in which to travel. From the gilded spires of Luang Prabang’s wats to the faded grandeur of Vientiane’s French colonial architecture, Laos boasts a wealth of architectural treasures. Whether in the towns or isolated hill tribe villages, the country is alive with colour and rich cultural traditions. It also has some truly spectacular scenery with forested mountains, jagged limestone karst scenery, caves, dramatic waterfalls and the lush flood plains of the Mekong River.
