Trails aren’t just for walkers, they’re for all of us – and so is Herenga ā Nuku Aotearoa, the Outdoor Access Commission. Our new name recognises more than the breadth of trail users, which range from people in tramping boots to fishing waders, sitting astride a horse or a bike, shouldering a rifle or pushing a stroller. Have you been to any deceptively named places?Fixing our name got us wondering ... what else might be misnamed in the outdoors? Join us on social media as we share (mostly daft) photos of #deceptivelynamedplaces. This is Joy and Kate experiencing some hellish weather at Heaven's Door :) Access to Waipara Vineyard Trail protected for the futureThe Waipara Vineyard Trail – Mountford Estate walkway was officially gazetted last month. This provides enduring access over part of the popular Waipara Vineyard Trail. It's a stunning trail that winds through vineyards in the rolling hills around Waipara. Outdoor Access Champion Suky is a Banks Peninsula trail blazer Walkers and cyclists can enjoy more of Banks Peninsula, thanks in great part to Suky Thompson’s leadership. We presented her with an Outdoor Access Champion Award this month. “I’m absolutely thrilled and proud to be given this award,” says Suky, who has worked in public access for the last 26 years. This year, five women are receiving Outdoor Access Champion Awards.
