Ricco/Maresca Gallery, New York

until October 19, 2019

Joe Massey was an African-American self-taught artist and poet who created a compelling body of work during his incarceration at the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus. His correspondence with Charles Henri Ford, editor of the pioneering surrealist publication View, resulted in the inclusion of Massey's art in issues of the magazine. Most of the works included in "Shut Up: Joe Massey's Messages from Prison" and in the accompanying monograph are drawn in blue-black ink, most likely using a rough-tipped dip pen.
