From the editors...

The student newsletter is produced every fortnight by the Internal Communications team so we can share news, announcements, selected events and some requests for help. 

If you wish to communicate around the University, the newsletter is just one way to do that. Please check our Methods of Internal Communication webpage, and feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.

The next newsletter will distributed on Wednesday 16 November - the the deadline is 4pm on Friday 11 November.

Muriel Duncan

Tower Receptionist, Muriel Duncan, celebrated 45 years of working for the University last Thursday. University Secretary Dr Jim McGeorge surprised her with a bouquet on behalf of us all.

University and DUSA reaffirm partnership

The University and Dundee University Students’ Association (DUSA) have pledged their joint commitment to enhancing student engagement, employability and representation.

Professor Sir Pete Downes, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University, and Indre Urbanaviciute, President of DUSA, signed the fourth annual Student Partnership Agreement (SPA). This document sets out key principles that define student engagement and representation as well as annual priorities agreed upon by both institutions.

Wellcome multi-million pound boost for biomedical research

The University's world renowned biomedical research has received a multi-million pound boost from Wellcome, the global charitable foundation.

Wellcome has awarded the University £3.75million from their Institutional Strategic Support Fund (ISSF), which enables universities in the UK and Ireland to invest in areas that are of mutual strategic importance to Wellcome and the individual institutions.

Baby Box design competition launched

The competition to design Scotland’s Baby Box was officially launched at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design last week, with students across Scotland urged to submit bold and inspirational designs for consideration by an expert panel.

Minister for Childcare and Early Years, Mark McDonald MSP, a graduate of the University of Dundee, confirmed that the winning student will receive a prize of £1,000 and exclusive mentoring from leading Scottish designers Holly Fulton and Scott Jarvie.

Languages Film Club (8 Nov)

The Languages Film Club will be screening the Spanish film Perdiendo el norte on Tue 8 Nov at 5pm in Dalhousie 2S13.

Generation-Tech : Crossing the Digital Divide (10 Nov)

As part of Dundee Science Festival researchers from the University will be discussing how they are currently exploring ways to use technology to benefit older and disabled people.

It takes place on Thur 10 Nov at 6pm in the Queen Mother Building.

Admission is free but places are limited so please book via Eventbrite.

Remembrance Day (11 Nov)

The University will observe a two-minute silence on Fri 11 Nov in honour of members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty.

A short service will take place at 10.55am in the University Chapel, delivered by Rev Dr Fiona Douglas.There will also be the opportunity to observe the two-minute silence at 11am in the Tower Building.

Athena Swan Annual Lecture (28 Nov)

This year's Athena Swan Lecture will be lead by alumna Jenny Marra MSP, speaking on Women, Work & Politics: Challenges We All Face.

It will take place on Mon 28 Nov in Dalhousie Building Lecture Theatre 2 at 12:30.

An international experience like no other for Scottish students

Common Purpose Study Abroad in Kuala Lumpur, 18-21 Dec 2016, develop your ability to lead from a truly global perspective.  Along with students from universities across Scotland, you could play a part in tackling the biggest issues facing business, governments and societies worldwide.

Ambitious Futures - 15-Month Graduate Trainee Scheme

Ambitious Futures is a 15-month rotational graduate scheme. Graduates are exposed to a range of business areas and will complete a comprehensive professional development programme. In addition to this, graduates will also be able to take advantage of a structured support network for the duration of the scheme.

Carnegie Trust: St Andrew's Society Scholarships

For the academic year 2017-18, the St Andrew's Society will be offering  Scholarships to the total value of $60,000 to enable Scottish graduates to study for a year in the United States. Preference will be given to candidates who have no previous experience of the United States.
