Te Wiki o te Reo Māori

New Zealand has marked Māori Language Week every year since 1975 & in 1987, it was made an official language.  Māori Language Week is a time for all Kiwis to celebrate the Māori language, to use it in everyday life. Te reo Māori is undergoing a resurgence and campaigns such as Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is one way to revive the language.

May you all be safe.  Have a good weekend.

This week in NZ history...

1893 — Women win the right to vote  When the governor, Lord Glasgow, signed a new Electoral Act into law, New Zealand became the first self-governing country in the world in which women had the right to vote in parliamentary elections.

1905 — 'Originals' kick off All Black tradition  The first fully representative New Zealand rugby team to tour the northern hemisphere was known as the ‘Originals’. They won 34 of their 35 matches and popularised both the haka and the ‘All Blacks’ nickname.

1941 — Flogging and whipping abolished   As well as (temporarily) doing away with capital punishment for murder, the Crimes Amendment Act 1941 abolished judicial provision for flogging and whipping.

About our clubs...

Mt Albert Bowling Club
 — established 1897

On September 15th, 1897, just down the road at Ferndale House, the home of Mr Tonson Garlick, a meeting was held among those of the district who were interested in forming a bowling club. The meeting unanimously resolved to form the Mount Albert Bowling Club. They adopted the rules of the Auckland Bowling Club with a few minor amendments.

They elected a committee, with Mr Garlick as President, to run their affairs. The Garlick’s were a prominent family in the district and much of the local activities occurred in and around their place. The local tennis club was already established on their property so it was only natural that the family would make available some land on which the bowling club could be established.

The club hired their first greenkeeper for 15 shillings a week. Two rinks were laid in, and eventually, the inaugural opening day for the new club arrived on October 23rd, 1897. The first members paid a subscription of one guinea.

The young club was not a year old when disaster struck. Mr Garlick embarked upon a trip to England, contracted an illness, and died. The loss was a severe blow for the fledgling club as Tonson had been the driving force behind the club’s establishment. The Garlick family, however, maintained a significant involvement with the club during its formative years.

Definition of...
polish

Oh yes, there are numerous brands of polish, and you lovingly polish your bowls before setting out in the morning.

Polished bowls roll better and nasty bits of stuff doesn't stick to them.  You may not have polished your shoes since last Tuesday but always you have polished your bowls.
