Members are reminded that the 2026 Law Society AGM is taking place on Wednesday 22 April 2026 (next week) at the offices of Ogier, 44 Esplanade, St Helier. The convening notice and supporting papers, along with information relating to the nomination of members of the Law Society in respect of all Officer and Committee positions, has been sent out to members.

Members have also received the newly-issued Guidance Note covering the use of artificial intelligence in the legal profession, which can be accessed here.

Newly- and recently- qualified advocates are reminded that the deadline to apply for a place on the next Jersey Advocacy training course to be held on Thursday 11th and Friday 12th June 2026, is TODAY (17 April 2026). However, this deadline has been graciously extended until 24 April 2026 to permit laggards to sign up. See further details below.

Important dates for members' diaries, reminders of members' and firms' obligations for updating the Law Society, and a number of other court-related, government and regulatory announcements are also included, along with wellbeing, education and employment updates.

The new permanent Directory section (see below) contains links to the most up-to-date versions of various guidance notes and forms relevant to the profession. This section will be updated and expanded to reflect and include the latest guidance and form versions, and will also include links to external websites which may be of use to practitioners.

Details of the 2026 The Jersey International Family Law Conference and Dinner - sponsored by Corbett Le Quesne - have been announced.

It will take place on Friday 2nd October 2026 at Hotel L’Horizon, St Brelade.

The theme of the conference this year is “Chattels: from the Hamster to the Super Yacht” and the keynote speaker is Sir Andrew McFarlane. 

There will be sessions in respect of the law relating to pets within family law, art, classic cars, super yachts and other chattels which occupy the Family Courts within financial remedy proceedings.

To achieve a quorum, a minimum of 38 Ordinary Members must be in attendance at the AGM.

In accordance with the provisions of The Law Society of Jersey Law 2005 and The Law Society of Jersey Bye-Laws 2018, the election of Officers and Committee of the Law Society takes place at the Annual General Meeting.

This year's AGM will be held on Wednesday 22 April 2026 at 4pm at the offices of Ogier (Jersey) LLP, 44 Esplanade, St Helier.

The Committee of the Law Society comprises:

• President
• Secretary
• Treasurer
• Development Officer
• 4 Committee Members

The Bâtonnier and President of the Chambre des Ecrivains are ex-officio members of the Committee.

Three of the current Officers and two Committee Members are standing for re-election for the forthcoming year; one nomination has been received for the Officer position falling vacant and one nomination has been received for the two Committee vacancies.

Nominations are invited in respect of all Officer and Committee positions.

In the event of more than one nomination for any Officer position or more than four nominations for the Committee positions, a contested election will take place.

Completed nomination forms should be sent to the Honorary Secretary of the Law Society (via email) by 4pm on Monday 20 April 2026.

Members will recall that, at the 2025 AGM, it was agreed that the composition of the Committee would be increased by two Ordinary Members with effect from the 2026 AGM, subject to amended Bye-Laws being approved by the Superior Number of the Royal Court. However, in light of an ongoing review of membership categories and practising rights, which will necessitate changes to the Bye-Laws and Code of Conduct, the Committee has decided to defer the proposed changes to the Bye-Laws (which provided for expansion of Committee membership) for a further year, by which time the reviews and consequential amendments to the Bye-Laws and Code of Conduct will have been completed.

Firms are reminded that their accountant's certificate (under Rule 47) in relation to the operation of their client account must, without exception, be submitted and received by the Law Society no later than six (6) months after their accounting year end.

A member's report, under Rule 50.1(a), must also be completed and submitted by the firm within six (6) months of the firm's year end, preferably at the same time as the accountant’s certificate.

Where a firm has changed their accountant or the date of its financial year, it is required to inform the Law Society in writing.

Law firms operating as LLPs which have been recognised by the Law Society of Jersey as Legal Services Bodies ("LSBs") are reminded that any changes in the membership of the Legal Services Body must be advised to the Law Society in advance of the effective date of such changes.

Any queries in relation to LSBs, including in relation to potential new applications, should be directed to Jonathan Bale on 01534 613950 or by email.

Firms are reminded that any changes to their:

• practice address
• website address
• primary contact telephone number or
• email address for general enquiries

must be advised in advance of the effective date to the Law Society.

Notification of changes must be sent to the Law Society by mail to PO Box 493, St Helier, Jersey, JE4 5SZ, or by email.

Where firms maintain a PO Box or JE1 address which does not include a physical office address, firms must provide the Law Society and the Court with a physical address for service purposes.

Key contact changes should also be advised by firms to the Legal Aid Office (email@legalaid.je) and to the Court (d.ozouf@courts.je).

Members are reminded that it is their personal responsibility to update the Law Society in respect of:

• change of firms
• change of circumstances
• change of contact details

Members are reminded of the importance of advising the Society of any changes in circumstances or firms.

Notification MUST be provided, in all cases, in advance of the effective date of the change.

All proposed changes must be advised by completion and submission of the Membership Update Form.

Completed Membership Update Forms must be sent to the Law Society at PO Box 493, St Helier, Jersey, JE4 5SZ, or by email.

No action will be taken in respect of any request until receipt by the Law Society of the Membership Update Form.

Members are reminded that any changes also need to be advised to the Judicial Greffe (to update the Court's records) so that they do not miss out on any important communications. Updates should be sent to Darrell Ozouf at d.ozouf@courts.je.

The Legal Aid Office should also be advised of any changes in personal details or circumstances. Details should be advised to email@legalaid.je.

The Jersey Electoral Authority (JEA) has released the official nomination form for individuals wishing to stand as candidates in the 2026 Elections to the States Assembly, which will take place on Sunday 7 June 2026.

For anyone considering standing for election, the nomination deadline is 22 April.

The dinner will again be held at L'Horizon Hotel, St Brelade and the guest speaker has been confirmed as the Lieutenant-Governor, His Excellency Vice Admiral Sir Jerry Kyd KBE.

The next Jersey Advocacy training course will be held on Thursday 11th and Friday 12th June 2026.

This course is of vital importance to those who wish to practice before the Jersey courts as an advocate, and should be considered an essential part of their training by all recently qualified advocates.

A letter has been issued by the Deputy Bailiff to all newly qualified advocates and to those who have qualified during the last five years who have not yet attended this important training. A letter has also been sent to all Senior Partners.

THE DEADLINE FOR REPLYING TO SECURE PLACES IS TODAY (17 APRIL 2026) BUT TO ASSIST IN LATE APPLICATIONS HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO 24 APRIL 2026.
