At Student Horizons our ethos is summarised as follows; Challenge. Discover. Achieve. These three words describe the guiding principles behind all that we do here at Student Horizons. South Africa Teacher Inspection Trip July 2015

In the early hours of Friday 3rd July, six senior school staff from New Zealand and four from Australia assembled for a week of adventure and discovery in South Africa. Our inspection trips are designed to give school staff a snapshot of a destination for a potential school trip for their students. It also provides an opportunity to risk assess first-hand before bringing a group of students to that destination. The highlights of the week included visits to various schools, the University of Pretoria High Performance Centre, Pilanesberg National Park, The Apartheid Museum, a local township and not to mention visiting world iconic landmarks, such as Table Mountain, Newlands Stadium and Robben Island.

From start to finish the trip ran smoothly and we were treated to some amazing highlights. I have returned convinced that not only is South Africa a safe destination, but one well worth visiting with a school group who will enjoy it and learn a lot at the same time."

Hawera High School Brisbane & Gold Coast Rugby Tour

Tour Leader Feedback: "Great experience, Tom our host in Australia, was excellent, well liked and received by the students and was willing to do whatever to make the trip and enjoyable one. I would highly recommend Student Horizons to anyone!"

A storm was beginning to form on Saturday 11th July and it wasn’t the Antarctic conditions approaching. Hawera High School’s 1st XV were on their way across the ditch for their bi-annual 9-day rugby tour of Queensland. The boys arrived into Brisbane airport on a beautiful Queensland afternoon with 9 days, 3 matches, 2 theme parks, 2 National Parks, 2 cities and 1 country town, a mountain of shopping plus an Antarctic storm ahead of them!

Game 1 was to be played under lights against the Palm Beach Alleygators and on a freezing night for Queensland standards, 10 degrees max! Fantastic ground and although the surface was a little hard for the Hawera boys they came away with a convincing win against the Gators. The after match function was brilliant and the Gators put on a great spread, 40 pizzas and freshly baked cupcakes made by the club referee and his wife with colours of both squads, which was a lovely personal touch. Game 2 against King's Christian College the next day was another solid performance by the Hawera squad, winning their second game with some boys making their first ever tries. Another great after match, with a great sausage sizzle...that always goes down a treat. A good rest was needed after these 2 days of rugby so the boys made use of the accommodation's pool and spa. Using the other facilities we cooked up a BBQ of burgers later that evening to ensure all were well fed. Game 3 against The Scots PGC College was to be Hawera’s toughest match on tour with the score leveled at 12-all at halftime. With a couple of late tries and an amazing run by Stevie-Rae they came away with a 29-19 win. The Hawera boys were being hosted in The Scots’ boarding houses tonight for some quality country hospitality. A thrilling end to their final match, 3 wins from 3 matches. Brilliant result.

A fantastic bunch of lads, very polite young men, with a good amount of cheekiness thrown in for good measure. It was a pleasure to be on tour with you all and I would like to wish you all the very best in the season ahead as well as with your studies. Challenge. Discover. Achieve

An Evening with Brett McGregor - Our Fundraising Support

We are always thrilled to see schools taking advantage of our Community Partnerships Programme and getting stuck in with the fundraising for their tour! In October, 14 boys from Rangitoto College will travel to Sydney on a Cricket tour and play 5 games against local school and club teams. They will enjoy exploring Sydney, as well as visit Bowral and the legendary Bradman Oval! All our groups have the opportunity to invite Brett McGregor (NZ’s first Masterchef) to host a fundraising function as part of our partnership with The Village Press. Rangitoto College have just recently hosted one of these evenings and Suzy and Rich from the office headed along. It was a hugely successful event, with over 70 people attending to learn from the expert, hear some of Brett’s tips and tricks and not to mention, sample some DELICIOUS international cuisine!! If you are interested in having an event like this at your school please do not hesitate to contact us for more information at summer@studenthorizons.co.nz

New Additions to the Team

Rosalind Swift

Roz’s interest in travel and people led to her choosing a Geography degree at the University of Exeter and when she graduated she moved to Japan. Her time in Japan was spent on a small island where she taught both Primary and Secondary students English and volunteered at a local orphanage. During her stay there she also travelled to China, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. This experience inspired Roz on her return to study towards a Postgraduate degree in Education at the University of Chester. Wanting to learn more about outdoor education Roz spent the following year working for a sporting outward bound company based in the UK and concluded the year on a summer camp in America. Now Roz is excited to combine her passions of education and travel to inspire and support future generations to travel through her role at Student Horizons.

Eileen Co-Verona

Eileen is born and raised in one of the 7,000 islands in the Philippines. Bubbly, adventurous, and competitive are just some of the traits that keeps her who she is as a person. She has travelled extensively around her country and across Asia to countries such as, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Hong Kong to explore what lies beyond the borders of her own culture and tradition. She is currently enjoying exploring her new home and discovering all the wonderful things that New Zealand has to offer. After completing an Advanced Diploma in Travel and Tourism Management, she is delighted to be able to start her journey with Student Horizons.

2015 Stage Challenge & J Rock - Great to be involved!

Throughout Term 2 New Zealand was shaken to its core – all the way from Dunedin to Auckland – with the whirlwind that was the 2015 Stage Challenge and J Rock…and what an event it was! Each and every performer, choreographer, set designer, costume designer, make-up artist, teacher, production team, volunteer, teacher and school should feel INCREDIBLY PROUD of their performances.

Being lucky enough to follow the event around the country, the Student Horizons team were truly blown away by the standard of each performance and were devastated that it had to end!

Student Horizons would like to say how proud they are to be a sponsor of Stage Challenge and J Rock and all that they do for the performing arts; an event that embodies our core ethos. It encourages students to push themselves out of their comfort zone and work as a team. It helps students to develop essential life skills and leave with a huge sense of achievement from all their dedication and hard work.  Challenge.  Discover.  Achieve.

Student Horizons would like to extend an enormous congratulations to all that took part, and in particular the brilliant Stage Challenge team with special mention going to Sarah-Jane Phillips and Duane Inocencio. Their infectious enthusiasm and selfless hard work was integral to the success of the event and made it an absolute pleasure to be a part of.
