Notes from the Office

Toner Cartridge Recycling
Sacred Heart is once again participating in an educational and environmental partnership with Charitable Cartridge Recycling.  Through this partnership, old cell phones, inkjet and laser toner cartridges are translated into money for the school.  And it’s good for the environment too, since most of the phones and cartridges can be recycled.

Look for the box at the front entrance and deposit your empty cartridges and unwanted cell phones there. Recycling always makes sense, and it’s a great way to raise money for the school.  Thank you for your support!

Family Directory
The 2016-17 Family Directory should be ready mid-October.  If you have not turned in your Family Data update, send it in immediately.  We need to have the most accurate contact information for every family for both the directory and emergencies.

Parent Lunch
There are about 30 outstanding Parent Lunch Forms.  Please be sure to turn in your form so the office knows the best way to schedule your family.  All full day Kindergarten through eighth grade families are required to serve or to pay.

On the reverse side of the October parent lunch schedule is an updated summary of the duties for outdoor recess parents.  You may be occasionally asked to help in this way, so please review the form so you can be prepared.  A copy of the Outside Recess Duties is also posted near the playground bin in the front vestibule.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Look in this monthly envelope for your conference request form.  This is a mandatory meeting with the homeroom teacher only.  You will receive your child’s first report card at this conference.  Choose the option which works best for you and return by October 24.  Homeroom 108 will receive a different conference request form from the teacher.

Morning Traffic flow

Please remember that the front of the school is reserved for busses. Car drop-off needs to be done several car lengths down from the main door, and not on Emerson near the corner of Walnut. Do not leave your car unattended out front and come in to the school. Avoid dropping off in front of the Armory and having your child cross the street.

In addition, traffic cannot proceed up Emerson from Alder at morning and afternoon dismissal. Your cooperation helps keep traffic flowing at a very busy time.

Scholastic book fair

The annual Scholastic Book Fair is almost here! The Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books kids want to read to our school, while raising funds for Sacred Heart. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level.

Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits. The 2016 Book Fair will be held Sunday, October 23rd through Friday, October 28th. Students will receive notices in their folders with the time and date their classes will be visiting the Book Fair.

If you are unable to attend in person and want to purchase books, we invite you to visit our online Book Fair at http://www.scholastic.com/bf/sacredheartelem.  You will be able to shop beginning October 4th through October 28th. The holidays will be here before we know it, so it’s a great time to support the Fair!

Parent may now sign up to volunteer at the Book Fair directly on our school’s Book Fair website. The website for our Book Fair is http://www.scholastic.com/bf/sacredheartelem. Sign-ups will be available on the site beginning Saturday, October 1st. We look forward to seeing you!

Final Gift Card Summary

If you ordered gift cards at the end of the last school year, over the summer, or at the beginning of this school year, a statement of your earnings is in your monthly envelope.  Please review this statement. You will be notified about your credit refund soon.

Baptismal Reunion

On Sunday, October 16, the Baptism Reunion will be held.  The Baptismal Reunion will be held immediately following the 11:30 a.m. Mass.  Parish families who received an invitation are asked to RSVP no later than October 5th to Sharon Smoller at sacredheartparishreled@gmail.com.

First Communion class blessing

Children who are preparing for First Holy Communion next spring in both Sacred Heart Elementary School and Sunday Religious Education will participate in a special rite of blessing during 9:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, October 2. Families are to sit up front as the children will be called forward with one parent to receive a Mass book. If you have any questions, please contact Sharon Smoller at sacredheartparishreled@gmail.com.

Family Rosary

Pope Francis has asked us to celebrate as a community a year dedicated to mercy. This Holy Year of Mercy is a time to help us rediscover the Church’s mission to bear witness to God’s love and the Gospel message.

We learn of divine mercy through Jesus’ passion, death, Resurrection and Ascension. In order to assist families to always be credible witnesses to mercy, professing it and living it daily, families are encouraged to come together to pray the rosary  in church once a month prior to 9:30 a.m. Mass. Recitation begins at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 16. What a beautiful way for parents to lead their children (even the littlest ones!) to grow in love of our Lord through the eyes of Mary.

Catholic Vision of Love (CVOL) parent meeting

The CVOL program is beautifully designed to enhance students understanding of the gift of sexuality through sacred scripture and Church teachings focusing on chastity and the sacrament of  marriage taught in grades 5 - 8.

A 5th grade parent meeting will be held on October 23  at 11:00 a.m. in Room 102 of the school buidling. All 5th grade parents of student in Sacred Heart Elementary School and the Religious Education Program must attend.   If you have any questions,  please contact Sharon Smoller at  sacredheartparishreled@gmail.com .

EmpowHER self defense clinic

The Sacred Heart Elementary Girl Scout Troop 52491 would like to invite you to our EmpowHER Self-Defense Clinic to be held Saturday, October 8th  from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. in the Sacred Heart Gym.

This clinic is open to all Sacred Heart students, parents, and siblings. Learn how to build confidence, improve your fitness and have fun learning important self-defense concepts that will help you in day-to-day situations throughout your life.  Josh Ryer and his team from Ryer Martial Arts Academy will be leading the fun!

Proceeds from this event will help the Girl Scout Troop sponsor a student at our “Sister School”, St. Antoine in Fondwa, Haiti.  Cost is $5.00 per Adult and $3.00 per child.  Please RSVP by October 3rd via the flyer sent home with your child.  If you have any questions, please contact Melissa Mlecko at mlecko@gmail.com.

Christmas Tournament volunteers needed

The Athletic Association's biggest fundraiser is the Christmas Tournament held yearly from December 26th through December 30th. We host 32 teams from around the Dioceses and raise money to benefit all sports programs.

This year, we are looking for a committee to help coordinate the Christmas Tournament. We need people to help with trophies, t-shirts, volunteers and to be present in the gym during this week. If interested, please contact Michele Cromer at mcromer@gtnlaw.com. Thank you!

October food: Stuffing Mix

In conjunction with Sacred Heart Parish, the school will collect stuffing mix to be contributed to the food bank run by the East End Cooperative Ministry.

Each month, the Student Council members encourage all of us to contribute a different featured food to share with our neighbors in need. Thank you for your support.
