Les Rochers Sculptés, Rothéneuf
Saint-Malo, Brittany, France
above and below: photos by Deidi von Schaewen
The country priest Adolphe Julien Fouré (1839–1910) started to chisel figures into the granite coastline at Rothéneuf, Brittany, following an illness which left him partially paralysed and mute. He resigned his church position, and for 25 years devoted himself to his creative work. More than 300 sculptures were produced, across an area of 6,400 square ft / 600 square m). Some of the carvings are free-standing, while others follow the natural contours of the shore.
The sculptures narrate the daring exploits of the Rothéneufs, a notorious family of local pirates, as well as devotional scenes, sea monsters and other tableaux. Fouré also made wooden sculptures of birds, animals, figures and totems, a collection he exhibited in a small space known as the “Diabolic Gallery”. The gallery was burned down during bombing in World War II and only a handful of his wood creations survived. Fouré's site is featured in our Outsider Art Sourcebook which is currently half price.
Les Rochers Sculptés Under Threat Fouré’s coastline rock carvings are still in evidence but are beginning to erode. Despite the work of Les amis de l'œuvre de l'Abbé Fouré (Friends of the work of Abbot Fouré), the environment in danger and requires immediate attention in order to be preserved. The organisation wants to alert the Minister of Culture about the worrying state of the site by compiling a letter with signatures of specialists in art brut from around the world, such as gallery directors, curators, journalists, artists, collectors, art critics, editors
and photographers. To show your support, please email your name and position to joelle.jouneau@orange.fr.
