Another innovation from South Africa is the Nacho Cheese Crunch Burger featuring a crunch chicken fillet smothered in nacho cheese, topped with a slice of cheese, cheese-flavoured nacho chips (yes, that’s three layers of cheesy flavour). 5. WAITROSE LOOKS BACK AT 2019Posh crumpets, celery juice, environmentally friendly household products and vegan ready meals were all the rage in 2019 as shoppers looked to simplify their lives, according to Waitrose’ annual food & drink report. Noodles, grains, seaweed and tahini were also a hit with food skewers another highlight (sales of metal skewers rose 9%). Note 4 trends predicted to make an impact in 2020: Middle Eastern food, ‘seacuterie’, salt substitutes and high standard meat. 6. WE’RE NOT ALL VEGANSNew Nutrition’s 2020 report reveals meat consumption is showing growth alongside plant-based options. Meat producers are looking at new ways to rejuvenate meat-based dishes, highlighting relevant consumer triggers such as sustainability, provenance, premiumisation and convenience. In the US, organic meat claims are up +13% and grass-fed claims up by +12% in the past year. Meat snacks are also on the rise with sales increasing as consumer look for on-the-go, quick protein fixes. Trending topics such as keto, high protein and ‘good fats’ make room on plates for both meat and plants. 7.
