WELCOME TO ISSUE [71] OF FABRICATE

Dear staff,

Fabricate is the official student newsletter at the Melbourne School of Design. You are receiving this email as a current student or staff member of the Faculty of Architecture Building and Planning. The cover image is of the Reichstag building which was built to house the parliament of Germany. The building which was completed in 1894, was heavily damaged in an arson fire in 1933 during the struggle by the Nazis to gain power in Germany. The building was minimally refurbished in the 1960s and was finally reconstructed in in 1992 after the reunification of Germany. Lord Norman Foster won the architectural competition for the reconstruction, which involved gutting the entire building, leaving only the outer shell. A very large stainless steel and glass dome topped the new incarnation of the building, effectively turning the structure into a monument by offering visitors a chance to traverse a large spiral ramp within the dome leading to a deck overlooking the whole of Berlin.
