Experts Recommend Erect Penile Measurements

When assessing patients with small penis anxiety, clinicians should measure length and girth when the penis is erect, not flaccid, researchers say.

Flaccid measurements tend to be underestimated, they added. And interobserver variability can be "significant."

Scientists from Egypt, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, and the United States recruited 201 men for a study in penile measurements.

Each man's penis was measured in the flaccid state and after a medically-induced erection. Erect measurements were considered "true" values.

When erect and flaccid values were compared, the flaccid measurements tended to be lower.

Flaccid measurements are "both unreliable and observer dependent," the researchers wrote.

Healthcare providers may measure flaccid penises in different ways, they noted. For example, a "skin-to-tip" approach might not have the same end points for each clinician.

The study was first published online in October in The Journal of Sexual Medicine. Please click here to learn more.
