Club Respect - Pass it on

DECEMBER NEWSLETTER 2020

Hello friends,

Clubs are generally keen to pursue a club culture that is safe, kind, fair and successful – but despite good intentions, their efforts can fall short of the mark.

How do you reckon your club is faring?

Reflecting on club culture allows your club not only to celebrate successes and achievements but also to identify areas of improvement, with respectful culture as the goal.

With this in mind, we’ve been asking clubs to share their insights through our vox pops series. This month we posed the question: “How do you build team culture at your club?” Check out the latest responses below.

In other news, we're delighted to have Sally Phillips contribute to our Club Respect Journal this month with Finding the Courage to Change. She writes, "Kindness must exist in sport! Sporting clubs are at the heart and soul of Australian communities. Sport has the ability to provide the perfect platform to facilitate cultural change and our leaders at the forefront need to lead by example". If we get this right, club members will thrive and more leaders will emerge.

As we wrap up for 2020 we would like to acknowledge the enormous support of our Club Respect volunteers Jan Browning, Jess Naylor and Zali Brown - thank you. We reckon you should also check out Jess' final Journal piece for the year: Can 2020 teach us anything about sport?

Have a safe end to your year, catch you in 2021!

Regards,
Tarik Bayrakli

CLUB RESPECT JOURNAL

Finding the Courage to Change
By Sally Phillips

"... Even though much about sport on the field, or court or pitch is combative by nature and the want and need to win is often the ultimate goal, I have spent months pondering this question. How do we change the poor and unacceptable behaviours that we have all walked past for so long?"

Can 2020 teach us anything about sport?
By Jess Naylor

"2020 has challenged us in pretty much every way possible. Sporting clubs at all levels and pay grades have most definitely not been immune to this. But now, as the year rushes to its end, it’s worth looking back at everything that has happened and seeing what we can actually learn."

Tips for The Supporter | Club Respect

Club culture is the sum of all of its parts; the values, beliefs and attitudes and the behaviours of all the people in and around the club. Club Respect places a 'right actions' lens over each of these roles. We encourage you to print the 8 information sheets out and hand them to the people in your club who you think will benefit.

When there’s a mass of supporters who appreciate the benefits of a respectful, safe, fair and inclusive club culture, who easily outnumber abusive and disrespectful people, there’s less room for abusive and violent attitudes, language and behaviours.

How do we manage a team with a disruptive kid?
By Phil Cleary

"There will always be players and people who test us and ultimately there needs to be a set of principles in relation to training that all players must agree to." Being able to effectively deal with difficult situations is important so that all participants enjoy training and match days.
