PTG needs grade 6 to 8 Level rep

Will you have a 6th, 7th, or 8th grader next school year? PTG has one more opening for a Level Representative from grades 6 to 8.

Level reps serve for one year and PTG meetings are held once a month in the evening. If you can help, please contact Julie Evans at JulieE@paar.net or Beth Sutton at bethsutton@ymail.com.

Forms and payments due to office

Please turn in your 2015-16 Parent Lunch Form by June 5. Past due payments for services and programs like Parent Lunch, Family Assessment, lunch tickets, and afterschool are now past due. Please finalize these  payments to insure receipt of report cards and transfer of records. This is especially important for Grade 8 families.

Tuition cost sheets and Family Assessment Option packets should be available soon. Updates have been made to the cost sheets for bookkeeping purposes. We are asking for a quick turnaround when you receive your packet.

Summer reading and supply lists for next year are in this envelope.  They will also be available on the school website.

Lunch ticket refunds available now

Grade 8 and Kindergarten students can turn in any unused lunch tickets for a cash refund by May 29. All other grade levels can submit unused lunch tickets for refund on June 3 and 4. Please send unused tickets in an envelope marked  with your child’s name and homeroom.

Thanks for your support of the school lunch program and for your help with serving in the cafeteria throughout the school year.

New options for Scrip ordering coming this fall

As accessibility to Scrip ordering expands next year, helping families to earn more, so it becomes necessary to increase the amount required for the Family Assessment. Students raise $1,470 for Nepal

The Nepal earthquakes on April 25 and May 7 sadly provided ‘teachable moments’ for Sacred Heart School students and teachers.

• Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world.
• Nearly half of Nepal's population lives below the poverty line.
• Over 10 years of conflict cost many Nepalese their lives.
• Each year Nepal experiences multiple natural disasters.
• Most parts of the country are seismically active.

Add devastating earthquakes to this already unstable country and it is not hard to imagine the sufferings of those who survived.

In the spirit of Christ’s charity and compassion, the Sacred Heart School community raised $1,470 for our Nepalese brothers and sisters and have made that contribution to Catholic Relief Services. CRS focuses on providing emergency aid to families affected by this disaster and SHES is honored to participate.

Watch for summer mailing

Look for a summer mailing in early August which will contain the 2015-2016 yearly calendar, lunch information for the beginning of school, and other important notes.

Band camp offered

Interested band students can sign up for Band Camp offered at Aquinas Academy July 20 to 24. The camp is organized and run by area Catholic School band directors including Mrs. Sherry Traugh. For more information, download the flier

Field trips planned for students

Sacred Heart School students are celebrating the end of a successful school year with field trips planned to support the curriculum, enhance learning, and enjoy the outdoors. Youngsters have been exploring the wonders of the Children’s Museum, the Laurel Caverns, and the Carnegie Science Center. The Tiny Tots Concert at Heinz Hall and A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Pittsburgh Playhouse will expose others to cultural opportunities available in our city. The Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, Tour-Ed Mine, Fort Pitt Museum, and a day in Niagara Falls will provide pupils with significant historic experiences. Children are excited for a day “in the fields” of science, culture and history with classmates and teachers.

Band plays in Carnegie Music Hall Celebration

The talented instrumental music students, under the direction of Mrs. Sherry Traugh, band director at Sacred Heart School, performed on the steps of Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland on Sunday, May 3. The  advanced band welcomed the public to an afternoon with Edgewood Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Walter Morales. “A Celebration of Music and Sports: The Perfect Pitch!" combined sports and music for a creative and exciting musical experience.

Need a tutor for ESL, math, or science?

Shoko Kanemoto is a graduate of Sacred Heart and Oakland Catholic and currently attends Ohio State University. She is available for summer tutoring in ESL, math, and science.

Having experienced in grade school the struggles of being a Japanese speaking student, she understands the difficulty in maintaining English language skills over the summer. She can be reached by email at kanemoto.2@osu.edu.

June food: Hamburger Helper

In conjunction with Sacred Heart Parish, the school will collect Hamburger Helper to be contributed to the food bank run by the East End Cooperative Ministry.

Each month, the Student Council members encourage all of us to contribute a different featured food to share with our neighbors in need. Thank you for your support.
