International Learning Ambassador Panel Inspires Future Participants

This month, Western International hosted an International Learning Ambassador (ILA) panel for students preparing for upcoming international learning experiences abroad. More than 60 students attended to hear firsthand stories and insights from this year’s ILAs, who shared reflections on their experiences and offered advice to those preparing to go abroad.

“Speaking with an ILA reassured me that the uncertainty was normal. After returning from one of the best experiences of my life, I wanted to support other students as they prepare for their own exchange journey.”
— Halle, fourth-year student, Faculty of Health Sciences (Griffith University, Australia)

Nisa Akdemir: Five Things About Me

  1. I’m an International Learning Coordinator. I'm passionate about supporting students through their exchange journeys, shaped by my own experiences as both an exchange student and, later, a faculty member.

  2. I identify as a Circassian–Turkish-Canadian and belong to the Indigenous Circassian (Adyghe) diasporic community in Turkey. Check out our dances on YouTube!

  3. I grew up in a storytelling-rich, ritualistic culture and won my municipality’s storytelling award in primary school, which I still consider one of my proudest achievements.

  4. My work feels closely connected to my background. I was raised in a multicultural, trilingual household (and now speak four languages), have lived in Belgium and the UK, and moved to Canada in 2018. London, Ontario, is now the longest place I’ve ever lived.

  5. I always carry a book in my bag; it’s like a security blanket. I’m a big reader, a hobby swimmer, an all-season hiker, and an avid yoga practitioner. One of my favorite things to do is spend a day at the beach with a good book!
