December 2017 PEPANZ 2017 Year in ReviewA busy 2017 has been celebrated at PEPANZ's annual Christmas function in Wellington with the launch of our Year in Review 2017. It highlights the work we've done on behalf of our members over the last year, representing our industry to the Government (both local and central) and to the wider public and media. This year we've made a range of submissions, held various events, launched new publications and had over 150 media mentions. Confidence is returning to the industry and we are looking forward to a busy 2018. Thanks for your support and all the best for the holidays! Standing up for seismic surveysA major multi-client seismic survey is underway off the coast of Taranaki and PEPANZ has been helping educate the public and Government on how they work. We have written to Ministers and the Prime Minister explaining the environmental regulations in place, including DOC's Code of Conduct. Greenpeace in Europe actually calls this the "most precautionary approach" in the world. Our views have been covered widely on radio and in print, including an opinion piece published in various newspapers. Global demand for natural gas tipped to grow 45%Demand for natural gas will grow 45% by 2040, according to a new report from the International Energy Agency. The World Energy Outlook 2017 predicts much of this demand is likely to come from China, India and other Asian countries, creating real opportunities for New Zealand. Other nations are keen to meet this demand and by the mid-2020s the United States is projected to become the world’s largest LNG exporter. The IEA also forecasts that global oil demand will continue to grow to 2040. While fuel efficiency and electric vehicles will reduce use by passenger cars, other sectors such as trucks, planes and shipping will continue to drive demand. Building support in Canterbury Promoting the potential of the oil and gas industry for the wider Canterbury region was the focus of a recent visit by PEPANZ CEO Cameron Madgwick and New Zealand Oil and Gas CEO Andrew Jefferies. Both gave presentations to the South Canterbury and Canterbury Chambers of Commerce at the end of November outlining what a major find like the Barque prospect could mean for local economies. New resource for ocean dataA new website resource has been launched pulling together a wealth of information on our oceans. The New Zealand Ocean Data Network is a joint initiative of NIWA and the Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN), providing a one-stop shop for ocean data. Users can search, find, and access a wealth of data from across the whole of the South Pacific. Over time more marine data will be added to develop this exciting resource. |
