The 2019-2020 school calendar is now available on our school website. Mathematics at QSI AtyrauQSI mathematics curriculum aligns with US Common Core State Standards to provide a rigorous, holistic approach to mathematics and its application to the real world. We adopted mathematics as one of our MSA (Middle States Association) accreditation objectives in order to continue to grow our mathematics standards, achievement, and quality of instruction. Part of the MSA objective is to have 100% of the student population meet their fall to spring projected MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) assessment growth goals. This is a high expectation; nevertheless, it is achievable. The second aspect is to further expose, develop, and improve problem-solving skills. Every class continues to participate in enriching activities that help students gain skills they need to solve word problems by determining the most important information, deciding on a strategy to use, showing work, explain how they solved it and give reasoning, as well as create their own word problems. Below is the rubric teachers will use to score students on the beginning of year word problem and end of year problem to determine improvement and growth for our MSA objective. We will be administering the end of year mathematics MAP assessment in May and look forward to seeing growth in student scores. Finally, every child within the elementary grades has an IXL account where they can practice their math skills online; for homework, or just for fun. If you are unsure how to get your child onto their account, please contact their teacher for more information. Collaboration in Secondary MathematicsSecondary Mathematics students visited Nazerbayev Intellectual School of Math and Physics to give a presentation on our A level Geometry project - the design and 3D model development for a proposed four sport park based on the best parts of the best parks in the world, using Google Earth Pro for remote 3D measurement. This week's powerpoint presentations focused on the four sports: skateboarding, scootering, in-line skating, and freestyle BMX biking. We have invited NIS to visit our school for a video presentation on how to use Google Earth Pro to accurately measure pretty much anything in 3 dimensions, along with a little practice in how to evaluate the parks and individual elements of the parks given a specific target group of users. The Eight-Year-Olds are on a Roll!In the 8 year old class we are really expanding our ability to add to our projects with research. We recently concluded our writing projects where the students independently chose and researched supporting evidence for persuasive essays. They were very convincing arguments for important topics of the day from why we should work to stop elephant poaching to the negative effects of student personal electronics in school. We are also in the middle of a project looking at weather patterns and the effect of weather on people groups. Students have chosen their areas with extreme weather and are researching weather patterns, climate, and extreme weather in order to hypothesize and predict how the weather can effect life. Our class is embracing technology to aid our learning. The students have shown great computer skills and are even working to program their own simple games in technology class! Investigating Havitats in the Four-Year-Old ClassIn the 4 year-old class we are learning about habitats, and why animals live where they do. We have read books, watched videos, made diagrams, and learned simple poems about the different habitats around the world. In our study of habitats, we have included the steppes habitat here in Kazakhstan and her inhabitants. Our class has discovered the names of the different birds (crows) that live around our school, and what these birds need in order to make this their home. (Hooded crow and carrion crow, in case you didn’t know!) We have learned about the different foods that they like to eat and have provided them with their favorite fruits and breads from our leftover lunches. Our class made and read a simple book about animal tracks, and we hope to use this bit of knowledge whenever we see footprints in the snow or sand. In Art class, the art teacher is helping the four-year olds make a habitat booklet, using their handprints. What fun it has been to learn more about this exciting world around us! Fun in Intensive EnglishWe help each other and work together in English! Also, we have fun together when it is game time!
