Mastectomy May Improve Quality of Life for Transmen
Undergoing a mastectomy can have psychological benefits for transmen, according to a recent report in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
The study involved 33 patients who were having a mastectomy as part of a female-to-male transition. The participants were between the ages of 18 and 59.
Before surgery, the transmen completed a series of questionnaires that assessed their body image, self-esteem, and quality of life. The patients were assessed again 6 to 16 months after surgery.
Generally, the participants' body satisfaction, self-esteem, and quality of life improved. However, the researchers noted that some "residual body image issues" persisted after surgery. Such issues could be addressed with psychological counseling, the authors suggested.
