Below are many of the planned events for the rest of the year. Be sure to mark your calendars! They learned that in real jobs, the field you study in university is often just a tiny part of the expertise you are expected to develop as you progress. A geologist often needs to develop advanced skills in physics, biology, chemistry, oceanography, meteorology, geography, computer programming, mathematics, etc., etc. The students examined various core samples through touch, sight (with a magnifying lens and without), sound, and smell. We did not have them taste the samples, much to your relief I am sure. The used the information to develop a hypothesis about which of 5 wells was most likely to produce commercial levels of oil. They agreed to disagree on which was best. International Week in the 10yo classThis International Week, the ten-year-olds translated for parents reading to the class in their mother tongue. Then in Art Class, we created T-shirts to greet the world. QSI Atyrau Cares!Students from QSI International School of Atyrau delivered our donated clothing and toys to the local orphanage! A great example of the Sucess Orientation "Concern for Others" in action! 10 and 11 year old Field Trip to NCOC Core Warehouse, Zhahan CompanyGeology is a passion of Andrew Stefaniak. He and his colleagues are hosting field trips for all ages to learn about rocks and how they use rocks to determine where to look and drill for oil. Students got to touch, smell, and observe rocks taken from different levels of the core of the earth. They observed the differences between sandstone, shale, and coal and the porosity and permeability of the rocks. Students were excited to find fossils within some of the layers of rocks. Things started to get a little heady for the 10s and 11s as they learned that some of the drilling is done at angles. To measure the layers of these rocks you must look at angles, use protractors, mathematics, and the Pythagorean Theorem. “The what theorem?” This was great exposure to ideas students will learn later. Each student came away with new knowledge and their favorite part of the trip. “I liked learning about all of the technology, drills, techniques, and how much it costs.” “My favorite part was learning which rocks are the best to find oil in.” “The example of the sand in the jar and the straw as the drill was cool. Also, the example of when he poured the water into the sand to show how the oil is stored in the pockets around the sand. And understanding how the high pressure wants to go to the low pressure.” “My favorite part was taking our graph and deciding where to drill for oil next.” This was only a few of the many favorite parts. Not only did students learn invaluable information, but teachers did too! A huge THANK YOU to Andy and his team! We look forward to more learning opportunities like this in the future. MAP TestingEnd of year MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) testing began today. Most students take four tests: Reading, Language Usage, Mathematics, and newly added Science. The new science assessment is based on the New Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which is part of our new science curriculum adoption as well as incorporated into our science accreditation objective. Students ages 5-7 do not take science, and ages 5-6 take only reading and mathematics. Remember, MAP testing is not a high stakes test! It is an assessment that provides teachers, students, and parents, with a glimpse into each child’s academic profile. Most importantly it is a useful tool to help teachers guide instruction for each child. We are looking forward to our end of year scores and tracking the growth from the beginning of the year until now. Once the testing session is closed, we will be sending the student progress report home around the beginning of May.
