Do you know anyone who would like to join University Court?

Court, the University of Dundee's Governing Body, is seeking to appoint a new lay member – you might know just the right person. Please pass this information on to anyone who has not been a member of the University (staff or student) during the last four years.

Further information on the role, criteria and applications are available online.

Interested individuals should submit an application to Dr Christine Milburn (courtadmin@dundee.ac.uk) by Monday 20 June 2016.

Principal's Question Time Submissions

Dr Anna Notaro (Convenor, Staff Council's Standing Committee) welcomes staff who would like to send questions and issues for Principal's Question Time to her via email. The next meeting is yet to be announced, however, the minutes from the most recent Principal's Question Time are available online

UoD IT shortlisted for Digital Innovation (Times Higher Education)

The University of Dundee has been shortlisted for the ‘Outstanding Digital Innovation in Management and Administration’ category of the Times Higher Education Leadership & Management Awards 2016. The award is for the deployment of our file store, sync and share service, Box, which has also recently been awarded for the Most Innovative Use.

We were the first UK Higher Education Institute to launch Box and since then it has radically transformed the way we work; simplifying everyday collaboration and helping us achieve our institutional transformation goals.

This is a prestigious opportunity for the University and we are pleased that our IT team is being recognised. Find out more.

Smalls Wynd Access on Wednesday 6 July

Essential building works are taking place in and around the Fleming Gym on Wednesday 6 July between 07:00 and 17:00. This means that the building will not be accessble and the disabled car parks will be unavailable.

The areas affected are Smalls Wynd, from the Perth Road to the south bollards at the Library, and the two small car parks at the east of 1 and 3 Perth Road, along with the car park at the rear of the Old Medical School (from Smalls Wynd).

Scottish Cancer Prevention Network Prize & Bursary News

The SCPN has announced that nominations are open for the 2016 Scottish Cancer Foundation Prize, which awards up to £10,000 to anyone whose work has had a significant impact on cancer in Scotland. Applicants can be nominated or self-nominated; they don't need to be a health professional, but must be living and working in Scotland at the time of the award. Find out more.

Also SPCN related is the news that the SPCN co-directors Profs Annie Anderson and Bob Steele presented a bursary to Sharandeep Singh, a 5th year medical student, to support his elective. Read the full story.

Nursing staff and students welcome torch to Dundee for Hand Hygiene Day

Students and staff in the School of Nursing and Health Sciences were delighted to take part in the Hand Hygiene Torch Relay last week to show their commitment to improving hand hygiene. As part of the World Health Organisation’s International Hand Hygiene Day on Thursday 5 May the Infection Prevention Society launched the relay at Edinburgh Castle, and the University team took it on a tour of Dundee before sending it on the next leg of its journey. The torch relay will finish at the national conference in Harrogate on 26 September.

Dundee Design Festival (Wed 25 - Sat 28 May)

Dundee, the UK’s only UNESCO City of Design, is hosting the first Dundee Design Festival, which starts today.

Within the former print works of DC Thomson an exhibition will be hosted featuring some of the most innovative design in the country. With a theme of health and wellbeing (including digital, games, textiles, healthcare, social design and architecture) the ground-breaking work will examine how design affects all aspects of our lives – design is everything, and everything connects.

Creative crime writing workshop (Fri 10 June)

Are you interested in crime related creative writing and never know who to ask to ensure that you get all of the forensic details correct? You might be interested in the half day workshop run by experienced writers, with forensic specialists standing by to answer your questions. With Stuart MacBride, Prof Sue Black and Eddie Small. Identification without Borders Sandpit (Fri 10 June)

British Association for Human Identification (BAHID) is hosting a half day sandpit event bringing together academics, researchers and practitioners with the aim of identifying cross disciplinary research and funding opportunities. This gives the perfect opportunity to share your ideas and identify possibilities for future collaborations this sandpit aims to challenge your conceptions of possible partnerships and how links between disciplines can create strong research teams. Students fundraising for a trip to refugee camps

Social work students are fundraising for a trip to the refugee camps in Calais and Dunkirk, as part of an investigation into the living conditions and mental health of those living in the camps.

Members from the Dundee Social Work Action Network (SWAN) depart Dundee on Saturday 4 June, and they need help to raise funds for the trip - afterwards, they will produce a report of their findings, which will be presented to both the Scottish and UK Governments as part of National Refugee Week. MSc student seeks volunteers for project

Ellenor Millican, MSc Anatomy and Advanced Forensic Anthropology student, would like volunteers over 21 to take part in the data collection process of her project. Ellenor needs volunteers who can afford to give up 15 minutes of their time to allow her to take a number of measurements, including the length and width of participants' hands and feet. Please email Ellenor if you can help.

PhD student needs participants for foot pressure study

Raed Alzahrani, a PhD student in the School of Medicine, needs volunteers to take part in a single session lasting around 30 minutes at the Ninewells campus. If you have healthy feet, are 30+, and can spare 30 minutes of your time, please email Raed
