TERM 3 WEEK 2   JULY 25, 2018
OUR LADY OF GRACE NEWSLETTER

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

On Tuesday 48 of our Year 3 to 6 students represented the school in the inter school cross country event organised this year, by Mr Brown.

As we have come to expect the children were a great advertisement for OLG in the way they behaved both on and off the track.

Our ‘boys’ team’ came fourth out of the 16 school competing.

Best Pirate Joke and Impersonation
The WA Museum has given the school two family passes to their “Pirates – The Exhibition” at the WA Maritime Museum.

The best impersonation was done by Ciaran McGarry of 5W while the best Pirate joke competition was won by Jackson Rose of 1G with this wonderful riddle.

Q: “What is a pirate’s favourite school subject?

A: “Arrrrrrrrrrt with Mrs Deed.”

Thank to the Communication Ministry for judging the Impersonation segment.

The best praise for children is to praise their own judgement.

When parents address praise to their children, it should be given with total sincerity. Praise is intended to give loving parental support through spontaneous words and gestures that celebrate the love and joy that exist between parent and child. Children know if they have truly earned acclaim or if they are being manipulated; they see through false compliments, exaggerations and flattery. As well, children can be confused by excessive praise – aren’t we all? Unrealistic praise does not ring true to them, they wonder what you want and will discount future praise as being false. False praise can cause children to feel anxious about their obligations or afraid to take risks or try new things. Children know that they are not “the best” and they can experience emotional discomfort at being told they are.

The best praise for children is to praise their own judgement. Offering encouraging statements and asking questions that prompt children to think about solutions to problems, are more likely to motivate them in a positive way. The quicker that praise moves from a material reward to a social reward the more beneficial it is for children. They no longer accept praise as something external to themselves but as an internal opportunity for self-development.

So, we parents need to keep those hugs and smiles coming, as well as those words of encouragement and respect. Timely praise is our way of saying to our child, 'I believe in you'.

School Fees
Unless families are on a “Payment Plan” it is hoped that they will finalise the payment of this year’s fees by the end of this term. Getting this matter dealt with before the pressures of Christmas also seems a good idea.

MBA WA Excellence in Construction Awards 2018
The Directors of Focus Building Company are pleased to advise that at the MBA Awards night last Saturday Focus were awarded two category Award Winners – one being for Best Education Building Under $10m for Our Lady of Grace School.

Focus Director, Adrian Ridderhof (holding the award), thanked the Project Manager, Richard Williams, and Site Manager, Dan Walsh as well as our Architects, Parry & Rosenthal (represented by Julio Amores on the left of Adrian).

God bless
Chris Kenworthy,  Principal

Spiritual Ministry

It was really good to work in the Spiritual Ministry last semester. We had lots of fun with activities and a great satisfaction helping those who are in need. We are grateful to everyone who helped along the way.

Thank you sincerely to everyone who came along to our Wine & Cheese Evening at the end of Term 2.  We are in the process of synthesising your ideas and feedback and encourage those who have not yet completed the feedback forms (re: your suggestions, volunteering and business community) to provide them to your Class Rep or drop off to the OLG office so that all suggestions can be included in our collation process. We encourage you to voice your ideas and ask any questions of the P&F Committee to help you better understand what we are aiming to achieve and how we can make OLG a better school for our kids.

If you have not yet had an opportunity to comment and would like to, please feel free to email us at exec@olgpf.com or complete an anonymous feedback form (located in OLG office) by Friday 10th August.

We appreciate it’s not easy to find the time, however all parent support and input is invaluable in ensuring the success of our social and fund-raising events and initiatives throughout the year.

We know that an effective father has a profound impact on their kids, thus it is of great importance to establish fathers and father figures that interact with their children as effective as possible.

Additional information and details on how to get involved in this worthwhile initiative will be distributed in coming weeks.  Have a great week everyone!
