Paul is a 2004 graduate of the College, holds a PhD from MIT (2010), and co-directs the Program on Political Violence and the Program on International Security Policy. He is the author of the award-winning book Networks of Rebellion: Explaining Insurgent Cohesion and Collapse (Cornell, 2014) and publishes widely on civil war, political violence, and international security. He is excited about building on CIR’s long history of excellence. Dear CIR Alumni- It’s a pleasure to greet you as the new Chair of the Committee on International Relations. CIR is the oldest graduate program in international relations in the United States – but it is also entering an exciting new phase of innovation and change. The rigorous study of international relations has never been more important, and we are proud to produce graduates who have a deep understanding of world politics grounded in high quality research. A New Academic Year This fall, CIR welcomes its largest-ever cohort of graduate students. Our 62 first-year and three second-year students hail from 15 countries and are already taking part in a number of new initiatives that are elevating CIR’s role at the University and beyond. On campus, CIR is now partnering with the Institute of Politics and UChicagoGRAD to place recent graduates in funded internship positions at many of the key nodes in the world of international relations. Thanks to the generosity of the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation, CIR is setting up its first-ever research fund for MA students-in-residence. We are convinced that the Mansueto-CIR collaboration on global cities will be reinforced by our strong relationships with the University’s centers in Delhi and Beijing. These collaborations complement our successful in-house career services. With the support of CIR’s academic and career advisors, recent graduates have secured fully funded scholarships for doctoral study at the University of Chicago, Duke, MIT, Stanford, and UC San Diego. Others combine rigorous language study and field research as Boren Fellows in Kazakhstan and Oman. And upon concluding their professional training, CIR graduates build distinguished careers in the academy, in think tanks, government, media, consulting, and many other sectors. Meet our New Faculty Thanks to a significant faculty expansion in the Division of the Social Sciences, CIR’s roster of researchers, teachers, and advisors has recently grown by more than 25 percent. Their research interests range broadly, including international trade, the uses of secrecy in war, gender and globalization in Southeast Asia, demography and religion in Africa, paramilitary movements in the United States, and post-colonial international political thought. Find out more about our new faculty here. Get Involved CIR is growing its institutional footprint in Hyde Park, in Chicago, and beyond, and we invite you to stay connected with the program and contribute to telling CIR’s story through your active participation.
