Essential Topics for the Busy Lawyer Friday, 22 February 2019 | University Club, Crawley | 4.30pm Adversus Pro Bono: The Seductive Heresy of Pro Bono Legal Work –
The Hon Peter Quinlan, Chief Justice of Western Australia
Doing justice is the essential obligation of all courts and all lawyers. But without meaningful access to them, the best legal system in the world is simply a hollow promise. And so the rise (and rise) of "pro bono" programs and structures seems the perfect solution. But is it enough? And what is the notion of "pro bono" legal work doing to the culture of the legal profession as a whole? In this seminar the Hon Chief Justice Peter Quinlan will pose questions as to whether our current approach to providing access to justice might have hidden dangers and whether there may be better ways of thinking about our work.
