Will you join the wrenegades?

Have you voted for Bird of the Year? Everyone gets five votes, and this year Forest & Bird are highlighting the lesser-known 'underbirds'.

We're backing pīwauwau, rock wren. Like us, they're small (but don't tell them that) and they have stamina – they're the only bird in Aotearoa to stay above the bushline year-round. We have a high-level view of things, working across boundaries to make trails, and they see the biggest views in the country. We even have the same colour scheme ;)

Pīwauwau have a low profile, but we think it's time they stepped into the spotlight.

A rock wren and the text Let me sing you the song of my people in the form of Rap

A different kind of track

We help connect people with the outdoors, so naturally we support Bird of the Year. Our staff are nature lovers, and after one of them wrote a poem about rock wren, another decided to record it as a rap. Why stop there? we thought, and Wrenegade the music video was born.

It's a fun and educational ode to these tiny endangered birds. And it's taking (a certain corner of) the internet by storm!

Ally Davey: Outdoor Access Champion

Ride Coromandel Bike Park was just an old landfill site when the Spirit of Coromandel Trust started building on it in 2020, with Ally Davey at the helm as volunteer project manager.

Ally can turn her hand to just about anything to get things done, and she inspires others to do the same. That's why we recognised her with an Outdoor Access Champion award.

Maybe you'll share one or two with your friends to help us raise the profile of pīwauwau, rock wren – the most overbird of all the underbirds.
