This third round we hope to see students get many more opportunities to be outside to run and play after the long winter months. During this time, it is important that families understand our philosophy of our educators coaching and supporting students in their after school activities. Believe it or not, but most of our teachers are not professional boxers, soccer players, weavers, video editors, or any of the other countless professions that correlate with our activities. However, they are individuals that have a love for sports or the hobbies that reflect what they do with students each week. Our goal is to have educators demonstrate a love of an activity so that it might be developed as a personal passion for children. Please remember to thank those that work with your children in their activities. In just over a week we will have our student led conferences. Please remember to sign up with the link that was mailed to you last week. If you have any difficulty at all, let the office know and we will help sign you up for the conferences. A HUGE thank you to the 5 year old classes for their fantastic presentation today on Kindness and Politeness. As adults we have much to learn from these young people as they shared about their enthusiasm being kind to one another even in difficult times. We are thankful for their excitement and true belief in kindness! Looking Forward, Robert S. Jackson, Director Students in 10 Black are currently reading novels of their choice as part of their Literary Analysis unit. Each day, students are creatively logging what is happening in their books, a word of the day, and a thoughtful analysis of an element of fiction. Looking for a great book recommendation? Ask a student in 10 Black! See the latest MS Newsletter here. The Jonathan Center Organization Invitation We are pleased to invite you to our World Down Syndrome Day Show on March 21st. There will be amazing talents, performances, fun time together because we don't want to leave anyone behind and we don't want the community to leave our kids and young adults with Down Syndrome Behind. This is the theme of this year's WDSD: Leave no one behind! Choose Wisely! This week the Ladybugs are continuing a unit on Healthy Choices, the theme this week is Healthy Habits. We cleaned dishes in the sensory bin with water and soap and we got our hands dirty outside to show what dirty hands look like. We discussed what habits are healthy and unhealthy. Remember to wash your hands when handling dirt! Sign up for Saturday Soccer at HERE. Maslenitsa in Russian Class The students from Russian class joined together to celebrate the Slavic holiday of Maslenitsa. Roughly translated as Butter Day, this holiday is celebrated before lent begins in the Eastern world. Traditionally it is met with piles of pancakes, so that is what the students made. They filled their creations with traditional jams, and very not traditional, but delicious, nutella.
Middle School Student-led Conference Preparation In recent weeks the middle school students have been preparing for student-led conferences. They have looked over their previous work in each class, reflected on their progress and set goals for the rest of the year. Through self-reflection students develop accountability for their academic and behavioral choices. Furthermore, this process empowers students to take ownership and pride in their growth. Students in World Government are currently discovering the connections between economic and political systems. Pairs of students researched a particular system, created a highlights poster, and presented to their classmates. The presentations and follow-up discussions help to guide students in their learning and understanding of these complex concepts. Elementary French The 8-year-old have been giving their opinion about sports and talking about their favorite activities, food, month, season etc. The students extended their sentences by justifying their opinions. They took a class survey on the most and least favorite activities i The six-year-old classes have been studying animal defenses in science. Two particular defenses that we explored were beak shapes and animal camouflage. Students experimented in using pointy beaks versus scoop beaks for picking up bits of food. Students also experimented with camouflaging moths so that the moths would not become prey for other animals. News From The Intensive English Classes These weeks Elementary IE students have learned how to research and write short Informational Reports on animals of their choices. It is amazing how much their writing skills have improved compared to the beginning of the year. Secondary IE students have just started the unit of Graphic Narrative in the Creative Writing class. They are reading graphic novels to get some ideas on how to start writing their own graphic novel. We have a new website where you can look through the items and see if you find anything that belongs to you. |
