LIFESAVING NEWS BP Rescue of the Month - Ruakaka & Waipu Cove 1st Congratulations to Ruakaka & Waipu Cove Surf Life Saving Clubs who won first place in the December round of BP Rescue of the Month. This followed the search for, & recovery of the body of a crab-fisherman who died at Uretiti Beach on Christmas Day. Even though the man couldn’t be saved, the important task for the volunteers involved was to provide closure for his family by returning their loved one back to them. Surf Lifeguards on patrol at Waipu Cove also rescued two swimmers who were being swept out to sea. BP Rescue of the Month - United North Piha 2nd Congratulations United North Piha Lifeguard Service for the rescue of a fisherman swept off the rocks at Fisherman’s Rock on December 8, 2019. BP Rescue of the Month – Whangamata 3rd Whangamata Surf Life Saving Club claimed third place in December’s BP Rescue of the Month for their rescue of two people in a double kayak that capsized on December 8, 2019. BP Rescue of the Month February Entries Nominations close March 7, 2020 for February submissions. Please remember to include photos of the Surf Lifeguards involved in the rescue with your nomination. Is Your Refresher Overdue? All Powercraft, Surf Lifeguard Award & Patrol Support Award refreshers needed to be completed & processed by January 31. If not, these have been marked as overdue. Please process any outstanding awards ASAP as entry into sports events will not be possible with expired awards. Rescue-Ready Case Study In December 2019, Piha Surf Lifeguard Jonathon Webber was the author of a paper which uses a Surf Life Saving context for a model of managing a crisis. ORGANISATION NEWS Rookie Time The Rookie Lifeguard Programme is all about supporting youngsters as they transition from Junior Surf to life as a Surf Lifeguard. Uniform Standards Please remember that the patrol uniform can only be worn by volunteer Surf Lifeguards & Seasonal Summer Staff while on patrol. It can also be worn at events promoting SLS or a Club; at educational activities promoting SLS; or with permission from SLSNZ. It cannot be worn in social settings outside of SLS. The KFC Epic Beach Picnic was held at Mt Maunganui beach over the weekend with the aim to build 6000 sandcastles to represent the 6000 lives saved by Surf Lifeguards since 2013 - when our partnership with KFC began. That's pretty epic! Cheers KFC for helping us raise funds & getting our beach safety messages out across Aotearoa! DHL Flip 'N Stay Congratulations to our DHL Flip 'N Stay Safe memory game winner Scott Tibbutt from Auckland who has won $1000 & chosen Mairangi Bay SLSC as the recipient club for $2000. This game reached 1.6 million people across Aotearoa & helped us share vital beach safety information. Shout Out to Kubota! LIFESAVING SPORT NEWS North Island IRB Championships 2020 Sunset Beach Lifeguard Service won the BP North Island IRB Championships for the fifth time this weekend at Paekakariki Beach. Sunset held off a fast finishing East End Surf Life Saving Club by only two points, with Mairangi Bay Surf Life Saving Club finishing third. Titahi Bay Waitangi Weekend saw a strong field of more than 50 surf boat crews from around NZ take part in the North Island Surf Boat Championships hosted by Waihi Beach. Titahi Bay were the dominant club, taking out the Open Men, Open Women, U19 Men & Masters Men titles, while Whangamata under 23 Men won both their division & the coveted ‘Dan Harris Champion of Champions’ trophy. NZ Surf Boat Team Face Tough Conditions and Tough Opposition The NZ Surf Boat Crews travelled to Australia for the annual Trans-Tasman Surf Boat Challenge, held at Mollymook Beach on Saturday February 15. NZ was represented by Muriwai (Open Men), Titahi Bay (Open Women), Whangamata (Under 23 Men) and Orewa (Under 23 Women). It was tough going for all four crews with Australia winning 11 of the 12 races. New Zealand’s solitary victory going to the under 23 female crew from Orewa. 20 Years of Awesomeness Oceans' 20 kicks off 27 February until 1 March. Australasian Police & Emergency Services The games include 50-60 sports & is open to any emergency services member who is 18 + (including SLS members) and is being held in Tauranga & Rotorua from March 4-12, 2022. One of the sports will be surf lifesaving which will be held at Mt Maunganui on the weekend between Oceans & TSB Nationals. High Performance SLSNZ is pleased to announce the appointment of Tanya Hamilton to the role of High Performance Manager.
