Upcoming Environmental Sustainability Opportunities

Please email Jenny Cooper if you are interested in learning more about or participating in any of the items below:

Spring Gathering and Urban Farm and Garden Work Party: Sunday, May 19, 10:00am-1:00 pm
Join us in our Urban Farm and Garden to help with transplanting and general upkeep, as well as moving the chickens into their new coop, and to learn more about the Environmental Sustainability programs and initiatives at Northwest over lunch. No experience necessary, dress for mess! Tea, coffee, and light lunch will be served. Please RSVP by Saturday, May 18. If you can’t make it this time but you are interested in learning more, let Jenny know that you would like to be added to the NWS Environmental Sustainability email list.

Looking for Garden Furniture
Do you have any lawn or garden furniture that is looking for a new home? The Urban Farm and Garden is ripe for additional outdoor furniture (benches, chairs, picnic tables). If you have anything in good condition that you would like to contribute to the space, we would be exceedingly grateful.

Summer Farm and Garden and Chicken Volunteers
We’re in need of a handful of folks to help with watering, weeding, harvesting, and chicken care during summer. (Sign-up sheet coming soon.) In the meantime, if you’re interested in taking a few shifts (usually one or two hours, and particularly needed on weekends and holidays), please let Jenny know.

Upcoming Concerts

We have two exciting concerts at the end of May for our Middle School and Upper School performing arts classes. Both concerts start at 7:00 pm, at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute. Admissions is free, but space is limited so reservations are strongly recommended.

Spring Sports Updates

Congratulations to our boys' track and field team on winning the Emerald City League (ECL) championship! A whopping 19 of our boys scored for the team in the League Championship Meet. This is the second time in the past three years the boys have brought home the title. Our girls were very impressive as well, finishing a close second. Congratulations as well to Track and Field Head Coach Allen Wood (and Assistant Coaches Alanna Coker, Cletus Coffey, Phuong Truong, and Jack Buckner) on being named ECL Boys' Track and Field Coach of the Year! Both our boys' and girls' track and field teams received the ECL Team Sportsmanship Award, an honor reflecting the efforts of all 55 of our Upper School track and field athletes!

Our varsity girls' ultimate squad hosts the State Quarterfinals on Tuesday, May 21, at Bobby Morris, at 4:00 pm. If we win, we'll play on Wednesday, May 22, time and location TBD. If the winning streak continues, our girls will play in the State Finals on Friday, time and location TBD.

Finally, huge congratulations to varsity boys' soccer player Graham H. '20, who was recently named second-team ECL All-League.

Faculty Performance at Seattle International Dance Festival

Northwest School faculty members Maya Soto, Nico Tower, and Jo Nardolillo are collaborating on [persIst], on June 11-12, at 7:30 pm, at the Erickson Theatre. Click here to purchase tickets.

SOTO + TOWER is a boundary blurring multidisciplinary dance company duo that creates whimsical, visually enticing stage works using dance, theater, music, and multimedia design. Each work is an interdisciplinary collaboration rooted in storytelling, community activation and research.

[persIst] features a cast of five dynamic performers, including Maya and Nico, onstage together, joined by Jo. This work signifies five years of flourishing collaboration and will be the last performance created solely in Seattle, before the pair goes bi-coastal this summer. This project takes an immediate, sincere look at tenacity and the makings of grit. It is a study of perseverance. What strategies do we use to keep going when we are physically and emotionally exhausted? The ensemble explores relationship dynamics and individual struggles in the current sociopolitical climate.
