2021 Virtual Rural Human Trafficking Summit

November 8 & 9

Working to End Human Trafficking by Increasing Education and Awareness Through the Health Systems and Community Response

The Pennsylvania Office of Rural Health, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Region III Office of the Regional Director, Health Resources and Services Administration; the Eastcentral and Northeast Pennsylvania Area Health Education Center; the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape, and the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania announces the third annual two-day virtual continuing education and outreach event to identify and stop human trafficking.  The 2021 Summit continues the rural human trafficking collaborative with an emphasis on rural prevention, treatment, and community collaboration.

Join us to hear from human trafficking "surthrivors" and how supports and services can be realigned to effectively serve victims, including lessons learned and best practices from Pennsylvania and other states.  Strategies for health care providers, health systems, and community-based organizations will be discussed to address this pervasive issue.

The audience for the Summit includes community-based service groups and coalitions, health care providers, health care facility managers and leadership, law enforcement professionals, advocates, and others interested in targeting--and stopping--all human trafficking.

Interested in Nursing?

Are you interested in pursuing nursing after completing your undergraduate degree?  Attend an information session on the Penn State second degree nursing program.

You may pursue this program upon completion of your 1st degree. Current and previous Penn State students, as well as those from other colleges and universities are welcome to join. Advisers are also welcome. Our sessions are informal and we leave ample time for Q&A.  Other university-wide offices will participate in the sessions too, including financial aid, admissions, and the CON graduate programs to discuss long-term educational and career planning.

NIH Nutrition Health Disparities Workshop, Sept. 21-23 (It's free!)

This event, which is free and open to the public, features panel discussions, networking opportunities, and two poster sessions. You do not have to attend every session! You can pick and choose the ones that are interesting to you and fit your schedule. Registration is required by Sept. 7, 2021 to access the virtual meeting platform.

Nutrition plays an important role in promoting health and preventing disease throughout our lives. But where we live or how much money we earn can affect our ability to access or afford healthy food. Ensuring food security and access to nutritious food are key to preventing health disparities in diet-related diseases and conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, and cancer. Understanding the role socio-economic conditions play could help in these prevention efforts.

This three-day virtual NIH workshop, sponsored in part by NHLBI, aims to review the state of the science related to food insecurity and the neighborhood food environment, then identify research gaps and opportunities. Participants also will explore innovative research strategies that could inform policies and practices that help prevent diet-related health disparities, as well as promote health equity.
