Welcoming new PhD Students

Building Connections: Schools as Community Hubs welcomes two new PhD students

The Building Connections team welcomed Carolina Rivera Yevenes and Natalie Miles during the first quarter of 2020. See project updates on Building Connection website - please note the new site address.

Carolina Rivera Yevenes
Project: School planning, design, governance and use/management

Carolina holds a Master of Education and a degree in education and philosophy. She has more than ten years of experience as a teacher and as an academic consultant formulating school intervention programs. She also co-founded Innovacien, a Chilean NGO developing 21st-century skills, technology and innovation in schools. Carolina will be supervised by Ben Cleveland and Philippa Chandler.

Natalie Miles
Project: Spatial Analysis of School and Community Interaction

Natalie is a registered architect in Victoria and has been practicing architecture as an Associate at Austin Maynard Architects with several award-winning projects under her belt since completing her Master of Architecture in 2013. This PhD project sees a return to her interest in schools and education after her master’s thesis titled School/City. Natalie will be supervised by Ben Cleveland and Philippa Chandler.

LEaRN welcomes PhD student

Elizabeth Masters

Part-time PhD student Elizabeth is researching the relationship between recent education policy and learning space innovation in NSW and Victoria. She is also an architect and runs the ACT-based Howff Design linking learning with place. Clare Newton and Ben Cleveland are supervisors for her PhD with Kenn Fisher and Wes Imms on her supervisory panel.

Project Updates

Plans to Pedagogy Updates

  • The P2P Symposium has been postponed and re-scheduled for October 2020 – more info to follow
  • In early 2020, we welcomed another school from the Whitsunday’s region into P2P
  • Visits to schools in Western Australia and New Zealand were completed before travel restrictions came into place
  • Our P2P academics are currently running online workshops and webinars for schools around Australia. These replace the in person visits supporting teaching staff to engage with data analysis and generating plans for their next steps.
Ethel Villafranca

ILETC - Congratulations!

We are delighted to announce that Ethel Villafranca has passed her PhD. Her thesis, Curated Learning: A Pedagogical Approach to Maximising Learning Environments for Students’ Deep Learning, resonated with one examiner in particular who worked as a museum educator early in their career, stating: "This work needs to be shared widely, most of all to enrich the learning experiences of young people.”  The thesis will be made publicly accessible via The University of Melbourne’s digital repository, Minerva. We congratulate Ethel, the first of the ILETC PhD candidates to complete her research, on her hard work and well-deserved result.

Learning Spaces + Special Education Needs

Interviews are underway with leading education and design professionals around Australia and overseas seeking insights into how best to accommodate students with a range of disabilities and other diverse learning needs. These interviews follow a review of the literature, which strongly indicates the need for further research into inclusive learning environments - from both a spatial and practice perspective. Rethink: Interdisciplinary evaluation of academic workspaces

Backhouse, S; Newton, C; Fisher, K; Cleveland, B and Naccarella, L.

Academic workspace remains an emotive topic. It is bound tightly with each academic’s identity, purpose and status. As universities increasingly focus on cross-disciplinary collaboration to produce new knowledge, the sanctuary of the individual office is under challenge.  A key finding of the research has been that change management – as an integral aspect of the project design process – is as important to the success of future-focused academic workspace projects as their spatial design. Read more >>>
