In society, we place a premium value on the way someone looks. We often draw conclusions about people before we have even met them or spoken with them and this is sometimes based solely on their physical appearance. COLLEGE NOTICES–––––– MASS FOR THE ASSUMPTION - INVITATION –––––– Tomorrow is the Solemnity of the Assumption, Mary passing body and soul from earth to her rightful place in Heaven alongside her son. It is one of only a few Holy Days of Obligation in the Church – all Catholics are required to go to Mass on this day. All are welcome to Mass in the Chapel at 1.30pm (Thursday 15 August). We will still have Mass on Friday morning, also remembering the Assumption. SENIOR AND JUNIOR SCHOOL CULTURAL CO-CURRICULAR PHOTOS–––––– Parents are advised that their sons will be informed of the photo timetable for the College Cultural Co-curricular activities via their Homeroom Noticeboards. Photos are scheduled to be taken in the Duffy Music Centre on Monday 26 August. COACHES WANTED–––––– The College is interested in hearing from any parent or Old Boy who would be available to assist with Coaching over the coming Summer Season. Coaches are sought for Basketball, Baseball and Cricket in both the Junior and Senior Schools. Applicants must have a current verified Working with Children Check. Preference will be given to those who have coaching qualifications and have had previous experience in coaching boys. JUNIOR SCHOOL–––––– FLIGHT FRIDAY –––––– Last Friday, we cleared the timetable for 6 Red and we worked across several subjects. The 'families' or groups of four boys, had to visit four virtual cities in Asia. FROM THE DIRECTOR OF JUNIOR SCHOOL–––––– This week we are delighted to welcome to the Junior School staff Mr Ryan Marshall as the 6 Gold class teacher. Mr Marshall is a proud Old Boy of the College, and has begun with enthusiasm. We also have the opportunity this week to welcome Mrs Jacinta Young, who will be teaching 6 Green from Week 6 after we farewell Miss Gooden. SENIOR SCHOOL–––––– SENIOR SCHOOL DEBATING AND PUBLIC SPEAKING PRESENTATION EVENING –––––– Parents and boys are reminded that the Debating and Public Speaking Presentation Evening will be held on Wednesday 21 August in the Robson Auditorium. Parents and boys are asked to arrive by no later than 7.00pm for a 7.15pm start. THE SANDAKAN REMEMBRANCE SERVICE–––––– It was 1945 and three years after their capture in Singapore, that 1781 Australian Prisoners of War found themselves interned by the Japanese Army in Borneo. They were used as labourers to build a military airstrip at Sandakan. CURRICULUM–––––– YEAR 9 EXAMINATIONS AND YEAR 11-2021 SUBJECT SELECTION–––––– Year 9 will commence yearly examinations on Monday 21 October and conclude Friday 25 October. The examination timetable will be available on the Year 9 Canvas page before the end of this term. YEAR 12 MAJOR WORKS NIGHT–––––– The Principal invites you to the Opening of the Year 12 Major Works Evening on Wednesday 4 September 2019. WHOLE SCHOOL–––––– BROOKLYN WIND SYMPHONY CONDUCTOR WORKSHOPS THE –––––– Last Thursday the Wind Ensemble was treated to a visit from the Director and Conductor of the Brooklyn Wind Symphony in NY, Mr. Jeff Ball, who challenged the boys both technically and musically as he workshopped with the ensemble. In one rehearsal, the boys performance skills had developed significantly. The boys are to be congratulated on their focused effort throughout the workshop. CO-CURRICULAR–––––– SENIOR SCHOOL SPORT REPORT–––––– This week sees Rugby teams playing their final round – travelling to Bathurst to take on St Stanislaus’ College. Let’s hope all teams can finish on a high! Tennis finals will take place at Barker College this Saturday 17 August.
