1. More salad recalls due to cyclospora

With more than 200 people sick, more bagged salads have been recalled linked to a single plant implicated in the ongoing outbreak of Cyclospora infections, and a Canadian recall has also been posted by the CFIA.

2. UK survey reveals changes in consumer attitudes during COVID-19 pandemic

The routine FSA survey finds more localised purchasing, people eating food beyond its ‘use-by’ date with a link to worries about affordability, and households reporting that less food is being wasted.

3. Spinach suspected in Yersinia outbreak in Norway

The source on a Yersinia outbreak in Norway is thought to be from salad with spinach or baby spinach. The outbreak which has affected 23 people is considered to be over by The Norwegian Institute of Public Health (Folkehelseinstituttet).

4. G4 swine flu variant – one to watch?

Chinese-British scientists writing in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences call for controlling the virus in pigs and careful monitoring of people employed in the swine industry, while Dr. Anthony Fauci comments that the new G4 virus is “not an immediate threat” to public health in the near term.

5. Salmonella illnesses in Australia linked to backyard chicken

An outbreak is being investigated in Australia that is linked to contact with or consumption of eggs from backyard chickens. This follows nine cases of gastroenteritis caused by Salmonella Enteritidis.

6. Trichinella outbreak in France and Serbia linked to backyard pigs

 The source of a trichinellosis outbreak in France and Serbia in 2017 has been linked to meat from backyard pigs. This follows patients having been exposed in Serbia and took pork to France which was shared between relatives and friends.
