August 27, 2021 Connecting UI Recipients to Postsecondary EducationLast week, the Department of Education (ED), in partnership with the Department of Labor (DOL), launched an initiative to help unemployed individuals access postsecondary education and training. This initiative includes encouraging state workforce agencies to reach out directly to UI recipients to inform them of their potential eligibility for Pell Grants and other federal aid. Research has shown that individuals who receive information about their potential Pell Grant eligibility are 40% more likely to enroll in a postsecondary program. In light of this, community college leaders are encouraged to urge their state workforce agencies to inform UI recipients of the postsecondary education benefits available to them. Additionally, ED created a new landing page that states can share with UI beneficiaries to help them identify education and training programs in their local areas.
