Listen to Sacred Heart teachers on KQV radio program

Mrs. McDonough and Mrs. Rickard will be featured on the KQV radio program entitled Education Plus to be broadcast on 7 a.m. on Sunday, December 1 and at 8:30 p.m. on Monday, December 2.

The teachers spoke enthusiastically about the Mark Krotec Science Center and how it has enhanced the curriculum and motivated the students. Dr. Ronald Bowes, the assistant superintendent for Catholic Schools, hosts this weekly radio program highlighting the activities and special events within the more than 100 top quality elementary and secondary Catholic schools in the six county area comprising the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

SHES hosts parent workshop on cyberbullying

Today’s youth are internet connected and digitally joined in ways that most adults do not understand. Understanding the student perceptions of the term and impact of cyberbullying is a critical piece in helping to combat the problems our youth are facing in the digital world.

Please join us from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20 at Sacred Heart School cafeteria for a workshop. Researchers will share the findings from a two year, quantitative and qualitative-based study centered on cyberbullying. Four middle schools in Pittsburgh (including Sacred Heart) and Chicago participated in this 2-phase study to help explore the underlying nature and frequency of cyberbullying in grades 5 through 8, and to gain a better understanding of middle school students’ experiences.

Tips and strategies for parents will be included.

Meet the Maestro program begins at Sacred Heart

The Meet the Maestro Program is a grant from the Pittsburgh Symphony which affords us the opportunity to host visiting musicians here at school.

Every class will have an opportunity to participate in this amazing program. Grades six and seven went first when they recently had a vocal training class taught by vocalists who perform with the symphony.

We are grateful to Mrs. Petrucci, the mother of Carola (grade 4) and Marco (kindergarten), for making this program available to Sacred Heart School students. A link with more information about the program will soon be posted on the school website.

Join us for Veterans Day celebration

Please join us at 10:45 a.m. Monday, November 11 in the Activity Building to celebrate Veterans Day. The school choir, under the direction of Sr. Rosie and accompanied by instrumental music students, will perform traditional and poignant patriotic songs along with the unfurling of the Living Flag.

The children will honor all living and deceased veterans, as well as all men and women who currently serve our country. The solemn ceremony is typically well attended. Those planning to attend the ceremony should be in the gym at 10:30 a.m.

If you have a picture of a veteran or someone serving in the Armed Forces, please send it to school with your child. He or she will hold the picture as the assembly sings "Thank You, Soldiers."

Scrip program looking for accounting help

The Scrip gift card purchase program will have two volunteer positions open next year. If you have good organizational skills and bookkeeping experience, please consider helping. The work can be done from home; no meetings or committees required!

One person is needed to track the spending and Scrip credits for each family throughout the year and produce quarterly reports.

Another person is needed to deposit the checks weekly (monthly during the summer) and keep the financial records.

Many thanks are due to Martha Hirst and Andrea Wearden who have quietly and capably handled these tasks for many years. Their children are graduating at the end of the year and they are ready to pass their responsibilities and knowledge on to new people.

If you think you can help or you'd like more information, please contact Judy Rodgers in the school office. Thank you!

International Connections hosts coffee

Please join us for an International Connections coffee from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 4 in the second floor conference room. Little ones are always welcome!

Sacred Heart Elementary School is proud to serve families from across the globe. International Connections seeks to extend friendships and encourage cultural understanding by providing get-togethers for parents. All are welcome.

Please RSVP by November 2 to Ruth Bence rmbence06@gmail.com or Melissa Johnson melissajo9@yahoo.com.

Cross Country wraps up a great season

By Chesca Bowser and Julie Brennan
Cross country coaches

During the East End championship held at Frick last October 6, our team did an amazing job:

JV girls - 1st place
Varsity girls - 1st place
JV boys - 1st place
Varsity boys - 3rd place

At the Diocesan Championship held at Coopers Lake on October 19, runners conquered a long and steep hill that challenged them right at the beginning. Out of hundreds of hard-working runners our teams did so well:

Varsity open girls - 1st place
Varsity girls - 3rd place
JV open boys - 11th place
JV boys - 16th place
Varsity boys - 11th place
JV girls - 15th place

Great weather, supportive parents, and hard working runners made the cross country season so enjoyable. Each one of us (yes, even those of us observing from the sidelines) learned about practice, perseverance, and endurance. That the children had such great results was just a bonus.

We are sad to say goodbye to our 8th grade runners, but look forward to next year when we welcome the incoming group of 4th  graders to complete our cross country family.

Varsity Red volleyball finishes in fine style

By Larry Ruppel
Volleyball coach

The Sacred Heart Girls Varsity Volleyball Red team, all 7th graders, had an enjoyable, rewarding and very busy season. Since the start of the school year the girls on the Red team have played eight away games and had four very lengthy home “doubleheader” games. Add in the many weeknight practices and the Saturday morning practice, and it is easy to see why the girls on the Varsity Red volleyball team have been so busy.

While the Red team lost a few more games than they won, all of the girls improved as the season went on and everyone played with great enthusiasm and school spirit. Most importantly, win or lose, the girls on the Red team always played hard while exhibiting excellent sportsmanship.

Make sure to congratulate the girls on the Varsity Red volleyball team on their wonderful season!

Varsity Black volleyball works hard all season

By Alyssa Ilov
Volleyball coach

To say that the varsity black's season was exciting would be an understatement. Sadly, we will finish just a few wins short of making the playoffs, but if playoff spots were given to the team with the most heart, soul, determination and teamwork, we would certainly be there!

The dedication and hard work paid off. Every single player's level of play advanced throughout the season with strategic blocks, awesome sets, powerful spikes and some wicked serves. Although we always enjoyed winning after three sets, it was a particularly satisfying win when we faced a more challenging opponent and had to battle it out to five sets.

It was fantastic to see all the players come together as a team and we hope that this year’s volleyball experience was as meaningful to the players as it was to the coaches. We wish our 8th graders well as they move on.

JV volleyball serves up a fun time

By Molly Rubenstein
Assistant coach

The JV Black Volleyball team just completed an exciting season. The team of 5th and 6th grade girls had 14 players total.

With great pride I watched the girls develop a love for the sport as well as make new friends along the way. I saw the team improve at every practice and every game, all the while supporting each other and showing amazing team spirit, win or lose.

Many of the girls had been working hard to perfect their overhand and underhand serves and by the end of the season their hard work paid off.  The last few games of the season their confidence blossomed and I began to see the girls spike. This season was so much fun for all of us.

November's food: Instant mashed potatoes

In conjunction with Sacred Heart Parish, the school will collect instant mashed potatoes to be contributed to the food bank run by the East End Cooperative Ministry.

Each month, the Student Council members encourage all of us to contribute a different featured food to share with our neighbors in need. Thank you for your support.
