Priapism Not a Common Side Effect of ED Drugs

A long-term erection can be a side effect of erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs. But it might not be as common as originally thought. 

The medical term for an erection lasting four hours or longer is priapism.

In a recent Journal of Sexual Medicine paper, scientists analyzed priapism rates for three ED medications: sildenafil (Viagra), vardenafil (Levitra), and tadalafil (Cialis). The research team then compared those rates to priapism rates of other drugs, such as antipsychotics. 

They found more cases of priapism reported with the other drugs than with the ED drugs.
