What will higher education look like in 2024?

What will higher education look like in 2024? You can help shape the student experience of the future by attending a Summer School.

This is a great opportunity to take part in an expenses-paid three-day summer school in Leicester (31 August - 2 September). Four places are available for Dundee students to take part in working groups, and develop skills in team-working, critical analysis and horizon scanning.

Great for your CV – apply by Thursday 19 May. Full details on Box (UoD login required).

School Tutoring Programme

Have you ever thought about a career in teaching? The School Tutoring Programme an opportunity to gain classroom experience in a local school to help make an informed decision as to whether teaching is for you. Placements are for around half a day per week for 8-10 weeks and will be available during academic year 2016-17.

It is recommended that you apply early as the programme is very popular.

Shanghai Summer School

Shanghai Summer School is a chance to spend eight weeks (mid June - mid Aug) in China. Activities include project work, industry visits, and language and cultural activities. Funding is available. The closing date for applications is Wednesday 18 May. Find out more.

The University doctor is retiring

The University Health Service doctor, Dr Tom Dymock, is retiring at the end of August 2016 after 28 years of service.

As well as offering clinical consultations to students and staff, he has worked tirelessly behind the scenes as Medical Adviser to the University, acting as an important liaison in medical and related policy issues.

As a mark of appreciation and thanks for such lengthy and loyal service, a collection has been organised. If you wish to contribute, please contact Norma Smith.

The Health Service is located in the Support Hub, OTI Building.

Council tax - liability and exemptions

Don’t get caught out with Council Tax this year! If you are a graduating student, moving in with a non-student, or taking a break from your studies, be aware that you may be eligible to start paying Council Tax. You can apply for an exemption, but know your rights! Student Funding can provide support. Find out more.

Dental students provide opportunities for the next generation

Third year Dental students have set up a work experience programme for aspiring young dentists - Dundee Dental Insight will let high school pupils experience a typical day in the life of a dental student at the University. The programme is entirely student-led and will run for the first time from 6-8 June and, already, the 30 places available have been filled by Scottish S5 pupils. Read the full story.

Psychology students dominate at Scottish UG Conference

Earlier this year, final year Psychology students attended the BPS Scottish Branch Undergraduate Conference, with staff accompanying them for moral support - and the group took home four out of the ten awards! Read the full story.

Chinese Calligraphy (Mon 16 May)

Want to learn Chinese calligraphy? Join calligraphy teacher Ms Xi Fang on Monday 16 May for a one hour course at the Dalhousie Building. All materials will be provided. Find out more.

Bright Club Training (Mon 16 May)

Bright Club Dundee is a public engagement event unlike any other - staff and students take to the stage to perform short stand-up comedy routines about their work at the University.

Fancy a go? The next Bright Club Comedy training course takes place on Monday. Once completed, you're given a unique opportunity to perform live at Bright Club Dundee, and around Scotland. Book your place by emailing revealingresearch@dundee.ac.uk.

Graduate IT programme presentation (Fri 20 May)

Interested in a fast track career into Software Development and IT Consultancy?  QA will present an overview of their graduate IT programme where candidates will have the chance to participate in a Q&A session, followed by programming/aptitude tests, a group task, and short presentation. Come away with a graduate job offer!

Enterprise survey - have your say

With a new Centre for Entrepreneurship opening on campus later this year, the range of opportunities for students to engage with entrepreneurial activities and develop enterprising skills through the Enterprise Gym will continue to grow. Please complete a short online survey to tell us more about the types of activities Dundee students are most interested in.

This is part of the research project GUESSS (Global University Entrepreneurial Spirit Students' Survey) which investigates students' engagement with enterprise-related activities in 50 countries and more than 1000 Universities.

All completed questionnaires will be entered in a prize draw to win 5 x £50 Amazon vouchers.

Athena SWAN Annual Survey

The University's Athena SWAN steering group wishes to obtain information on how students and staff in all subjects and of all genders view aspects of the working and studying environment and practices at the University. Please take a few minutes to complete the annual survey.

Lecturers train for half marathon to help students

Textile Design lecturers Jane Keith and Sara Robertson are currently training to run the Edinburgh half marathon on 29 May as a way to raise funds for their 2016 graduating students. They need to raise £400 to help support the students with their own fundraising to attend New Designers in London. Help Jane and Sara (and the students) by donating - please show your support.

Business student is raising funds to help fellow student

Business student, Ieva Zilionyte, is running the Scottish half marathon in September to raise funds for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a genetic disorder in which the structure of connective tissue is abnormally fragile. Ieve's friend was diagnosed with EDS and is unable to complete her degree, so Ieva is training now and throughout the summer in a bid to run the half marathon and raise funds to help EDS UK, the charity that funds research into finding a cure. Raise funds for CHAS on funky footwear Friday

On Friday 20 May we need you to wear your most funky footwear!

Pop in to the Chaplaincy (10am-4pm) to show off your fabulous shoes and crazy socks - they'll take a photo and post it to their Facebook page. All the Chaplaincy asks is for donations to help babies, children and young people with life-shortening conditions, and their families, facing a difficult journey ahead.

As well as sharing the University's funky footwear on Facebook, they'll send the photos and funds raised to CHAS. Find out more via the Facebook event.

If you can't make it but would like to donate, text CHWK16 £1 to 70070 (or any amount of your choice) and feel free to post your picture to the Facebook page directly.
