December Theme: Beginning the Internship Search Over the next few months, our Monthly Newsletter themes will focus on supporting our Scholars with their career development. This month, the Newsletter theme for our Mentors and Scholars is on Beginning the Internship Search. Even as we continue to navigate the reality of the pandemic, there are still many virtual/remote internship and job opportunities for our Scholars to apply for! Our Advising Team has developed a resource guide on important steps for beginning and organizing one's internship search. The guide also includes various resources you and your Scholar can consult as you support them throughout their internship application process. We encourage you to review the guide and share its tips and resources in a discussion with your Scholar. General Announcements: 2020 Winter Career Conference Did you know that, in 2015-2016, only 35% of employed first-generation college students had a job related to their major?
Scholar Docs Period: 12/14 - 1/6 Scholar Doc submission for Winter/Spring 2021 will start on December 14th and check distribution will begin the first week of February 2021. We are sharing the following dates for your information: - Scholar Docs Submission OPEN: December 14, 2020 If your Scholar needs support with Scholar Docs or needs to request a Proof of Scholarship letter, they should email advising@oaklandpromise.org. Recap: Fall Mentor Team Meetings Throughout October and November the Mentor Program Staff, along with Mentor Leads, hosted 10 virtual Mentor Team Meetings. Thank you to all of the Mentors who attended a Mentor Team Meeting and engaged with us in our group discussions. Special thanks as well to Mentor Leads - James Vossoughi (SJSU), Felicia Vargas (SFSU), Gayle Saldinger and Norman Yau (UCB), Kasia Wiacek (UCM), Elaine Jackson and Alex Poon (UCD) and York Prado (Pvt/East) for their support and dedication to the Mentor Program and to all of the Mentors on their various Mentor Teams. If you were not able to attend your Mentor Team Meeting (we missed you!), please be on the lookout for notes from the meeting; you should receive them by the end of this month, if you haven’t already. Additionally, anyone who attended the meeting will also be sent a short survey - please take a few moments to complete it when you do. We look forward to your responses. Mentor Recruitment Now Open We are still recruiting! We will award 500+ Scholarships to graduating seniors this spring, and they need Mentors like you! OP Black Excellence Grant In partnership with Harlem Children Zone, the Oakland Promise is launching our Black Excellence Grant, to support Oakland Black/African-American Scholars in achieving their post-secondary goals. Oakland Promise believes in an Oakland community without barriers to equity, and we hope this grant can provide additional financial support to our Black youth. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis -- encourage your Scholar to apply today! OP Youth Organizer GrantThis week, we are launching the Oakland Promise Youth Organizer Grant. This grant is open to Oakland youth of any age seeking to start or continue efforts of community service and leadership within Black or other underserved communities of color. Any youth in Oakland engaged in activism in service of the Black and/or underserved communities of color, or to youth-led nonprofit organizations or initiatives are encouraged to apply. If you know any Oakland youth who fit this criteria, encourage them to apply today! Reminders for your Scholars UC & CSU Deadlines Extended! Both the UC and CSU transfer applications deadlines have been extended! The UC Application deadline is now Friday, 12/4. The CSU Application deadline is Tuesday, 12/15. Is your Scholar planning on transferring to a UC or CSU? Do they need support completing their application by the deadline? Have them reach out to advising@oaklandpromise.org. FAFSA/Dream Act Now Open 2020-2021 applications for the FAFSA and Dream Act are now open! Students must fill out the FAFSA or Dream Act in order to be eligible for financial aid in Fall 2021 and Spring 2022. Does your Scholar need support filling out their FAFSA or Dream Act application? Are they unsure which one they should complete? Students can reach out to advising@oaklandpromise.org for 1:1 support.
