As you may be aware, Finance Minister Grant Robertson announced in the 2020 Budget that for the first time there will be a Central Government contribution to the costs of surf life saving operations – at a level of $9.4 million per year in perpetuity. Cheers LIFEGUARDING NEWS BP RESCUE of the MONTH Congratulations to the Surf Lifeguards from Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service who won 1st place in the March round of BP Rescue of the Month for the delicate & careful rescue of a jet skier who had suffered potentially life-changing injuries. BP RESCUE of the MONTH Congratulations to the TSB Nationals Event Management & First Aid teams who saved the life of a Masters competitor who suffered a cardiac arrest at the event. If you have some great photos that you want us to share please send them to: Ian Smith It is with sadness that SLSNZ shares the news that Ian Smith “Smithy” passed away on April 18 after recovering from a hip operation. He was a Life Member at Karekare Surf Life Saving Club. He joined the club in 1964 & was involved in organising the club’s 80th anniversary. Smithy is remembered for being an excellent Patrol Captain, he was hugely popular, enormous fun to be with & had a generous spirit. Peg Broadbent SLSNZ offers its condolences to the family of Allison Joan Broadbent (Peg) nee Armour, who passed away on April 29 in her 100th year. Peg was one of the original lady members of the Waihi Beach Surf Club & was a wonderful, competitive club member. The photo on the left was taken in 1937 at Waihi Beach. The photo on the right is from the club's 75th Anniversary in 2010 which she attended with four generations of her family. RIP Peg, fondly remembered by many. Check out these three Christchurch clubs with their new gear: To see the full list of 2019 grant recipients, visit: LIFESAVING SPORT NEWS Lock-down is Time to Relax, Reflect & Re-focus After the highs of being selected for Surf Life Saving NZ’s High Performance squads Lifesaving Sport athletes have been adjusting to training creatively & within the restrictions of an international pandemic. The Black Fins, Junior Black Fins & IRB crews were all due to attend the Lifesaving World Championships 2020 in Riccione, Italy in September, however the decision was made to move the event to 2022. Australian Police & Emergency Services Games Cancelled The 2020 Australasian Police & Emergency Services Games, which were to be held in Wollongong, New South Wales, have been cancelled due to COVID-19. The 2022 games will be held in Rotorua and Tauranga on March 4 – 11. Drug Free Sport NZ - The Drug Free Sport New Zealand Education Team has launched Clean Sport 101 (CS101). The 15 minute e-learning course is for club level athletes, coaches, managers, parents & other support people. It explains how anti-doping rules apply.
