GRUBHUB'S 'YEAR IN REVIEW' REPORTGrubhub, one of America’s leading food-ordering and delivery services, has shared findings from their annual ‘Year in Food’ report which analyses orders throughout this turbulent year. Some of the top ten orders were for spicy chicken sandwiches, chicken burrito bowls, steak quesadillas and roast beef sandwiches. The most popular pizza ordered was Hawaiian and the most popular burger was garlic mushroom. Ultimately, the report shows that 2020 was the year for comfort foods and caffeine in the States. 2. EAGERNESS TO DINE OUT AGAIN86% of Brits reported they would feel confident dining out, either indoors or outdoors, when restrictions are lifted, according to booking service, OpenTable. 70% of respondents stated how much they missed dining out with almost 40% planning to visit restaurants more often than before the pandemic. In an analysis of most popular cuisines, British seen the largest growth in popularity and rose to top cuisine followed by Italian, gastropub, American and steak. Sentiment appears the same around the world as consumers are eager to return to restaurants. 3. SHAKE SHACK ADDS BLACK TRUFFLEShake Shack, American fast casual chain known for their burgers and milkshakes, have launched a range of “luxurious” burgers topped with black truffle sauce. The premium range served on potato buns includes a ‘Black Truffle Burger’ featuring Roth Cheese Gruyere, black truffle sauce and crispy shallots; a ‘Black Truffle ‘Shroom Burger’ featuring a crispy portobello mushroom, melted muenster and cheddar cheeses, black truffle sauce and shredded lettuce; and the ‘Black Truffle Shack Stack’ is a combination of both. With prices ranging from $8.89 to $11.89, Shake Shack wanted to provide this elevated range at a reasonable price for their customers. 4. CHIPOTLE TRIALS SMOKED BRISKETChipotle Mexican Grill is now trialing Smoked Brisket in select locations in Ohio and California. The brisket is seasoned with a special spice blend before being seared on the grill and topped with a Mexican pepper sauce. Chipotle followed a similar trial process of gathering customer feedback for their Carne Asada before rolling out to all restaurants. Shares of Chipotle, which has a market value of over $36 billion, have increased by 54% so far this year. 5. FESTIVE FEASTS DELIVERED TO YOUFor those who want to avoid the shops this year, many retailers are offering delivery of Christmas dinner boxes with all the classics either prepared for you or to cook at home. There is a great selection this year for those on budget or those looking to feed from two to twelve guests. Morrison’s offers a 4-person feast on a budget with most dishes from their ‘The Best’ range. MuscleFood has an easy two-pan box, one for a variety of meats and the other for veg, that feeds up to six guests. Abel and Cole are offering an organic box complete with a bottle of bubbles. 6. DOMINO'S INDIAN-INSPIRED PIZZASDomino’s Australia has added more international flavour to their menu with two Indian-inspired pizzas. The ‘Indi Chicken Tikka’ is Domino’s take on an Indian classic with diced paneer cheese, seasoned chicken, capsicum, tomato, red onion, chilli flakes and spring onions on a creamy tikka masala sauce base. The ‘Spicy Peppy Paneer’ is a vegetarian option featuring diced paneer cheese, red cherry peppers, red onion, capsicum, spicy jalapenos and Peri Peri sauce on a butter sauce base. The two flavours are the most popular pizzas in India, allowing Australians who may be missing overseas adventure the chance to travel with their tastebuds. 7. SELFRIDGE'S CHRISTMAS STREET MARKETReopening this week with a Christmas revamp is Selfridge’s Mews Market in London which will combine food along with retail stalls and fairground rides. The department store has teamed up with the founder of Street Feast to make sure the food truck selection satisfies all guests at the winter wonderland. Some of the food traders include Only Jerkin offering fried chicken and jerk gravy, Tramshed Project offering burgers and BBQ, Fundi Pizza and Pabellon with their Venezuelan arepas filled with slow cooked proteins. 8. TWISTED LONDON TEAMS UP WITH ASDATwisted London is teaming up with Asda’s Clapham Junction store to provide their full menu offerings to customers ordering online. The collaboration is in good timing with the increasing demand for food delivery as fans of the online restaurant can receive their favourite Twisted dishes like the ‘Money Shot’ and ‘Hashtag’ burgers when their groceries are delivered. They will also run the cafe and development kitchen in the Asda store offering adding to their food-to-go offerings of burgers, salads and spicy chicken dishes. 9. SAINSBURY'S ECO-FRIENDLY STORESainsbury’s has opened their most environmentally friendly store last week in Northamptonshire. A key target of the new store is reducing water usage with installed water meters and water-saving taps. The branch reuses heat and has demand-controlled ventilation which varies for different production areas. Other eco-friendly initiatives include bee hotels, electric vehicle charging points, LED lighting and energy efficient fans. This is part of Sainsbury’s ambition to be net zero across its operations by 2040.
