SUBWAY'S UNREAL TERIYAKI Subway has officially launched the plant-based version of their signature Teriyaki Chicken in France this week. The new Unreal Teriyaki sub will be available until the end of October and is made with Dawn Farms’ own roasted soy strips marinated in bespoke Japanese-style sauce and seasonings. In addition to the new product launch, Subway redesigned the sandwich packaging so that it’s made from 100% recyclable material. 2. CHICAGO TOWN'S NEW STUFFED PIZZASChicago Town has added three new flavours to its signature tomato sauce stuffed-crust range. The Chicken & Bacon Melt, comes with chicken, bacon and cheese, while the Manhattan Meaty is topped with slices of pork, pepperoni, bacon, smoky ham, mushrooms, mozzarella and BBQ sauce. For flexitarians, the new Saucy Vegan is loaded with BBQ seasoned jackfruit, peppers, onions and topped with dairy-free mozzarella. All three flavours are available in stores now and aimed at younger consumers looking for dynamic takeaway offerings. 3. ON THE SHACK TRACKShake Shack is boosting efforts to drive sales with new Shack Track initiatives. Some of these efforts include new limited time offers, drive-thru lanes and walk-up windows where suitable. The chain has brought back a spicy version of its classic Chick’n Shack sandwich that includes a fried chicken breast with guajillo and cayenne pepper seasonings, cherry pepper slaw and pickles. New menu items include Hot Chick’n Bites, Hot Spicy Fries and Hot Spicy Cheese Fries, all with the new fiery seasoning. 4. JOLLIBEE EXPANDS IN THE UKJollibee, one of the Philippines leading fast food restaurants, have opened their second UK site in Liverpool following a successful launch in London. With more than 1,400 locations across the Philippines, USA & Europe, Jollibee plans to open a further 50 sites in the UK over the next 5 years. The Liverpool location will be the first to showcase Jollibee’s new branding specifically designed for their UK audience and has the capacity to seat 93 customers across two floors. New menu items will also be available including a Tropical Burger, Asian Chicken Tender Rice Bowl, Asian Slaw and Mango Coconut Sundae. Their next location is set to open in Leicester at the end of 2020. 5. CARREFOUR GROWS IN SPAINFrench retailer, Carrefour, strengthens its position in Spain with the acquisition of 172 Supersol stores in an agreement worth €78m. The newly acquired convenience stores and supermarkets generated sales of about €450m in 2019. Carrefour will use the acquired stores to diversify its network and develop its food e-commerce operations. Most are located in major Spanish cities such as Madrid, Malaga, Cadiz and Seville which are central for the brand’s new order pick-up points. 6. LOVE FOOD GIVE FOODFor the 22nd year, Action Against Hunger is running its Love Food Give Food campaign from August to October. Consumers can donate £1 onto their bill at participating UK food and hospitality establishments. Shake Shack, Hawksmoor and Tapas Revolution are among the many restaurants partaking in the campaign this year. The campaign supports over 20 million people in over 40 countries around the world. 7. COVID-19 CAUSES SHIFT IN DIETSConsumers in the UK are interested in switching to more nutritious and sustainable diets according to a study by IGD. More than half of participants have already changed or were considering changing their food purchases due to the impact of COVID-19. The head of Nutrition and Scientific Affairs at IGD finds that the pandemic has highlighted our reliance on food supply chains and the link between healthy diets and our health. Price and preference for current purchases were identified as barriers for most participants but 63% reported health as their main motivator for a change in their diet. 8. A PIZZA BOX MADE FROM PIZZAVinnie’s Pizzeria, an independent Brooklyn restaurant, is known for pushing boundaries and experimenting with flavours. Their latest innovation is pizza delivered in a “box” made out of pizza. This edible container includes the pizzeria’s signature pepperoni pie and can be customised accordingly for $45. The idea stemmed from a sustainable perspective as pizza boxes are typically discarded of right away so Vinnie’s ‘Trade Marked’ box pizza takes care of clean-up and provides more of what customers want. 9. PRET'S NEW SUBSCRIPTION SERVICEPret a Manger is launching its in-shop coffee subscription, called YourPret Barista, on September 8th as part of its post-lockdown recovery programme. Subscribers are able to order any one drink offering per transaction up to five times a day. The subscription has a fixed monthly cost of £20 but is free for the first month as part of its national launch. Although Pret offers a variety of food items, coffee has seen a greater amount of sales since reopening in May.
