Full Speed Ahead: Advocacy Meetings With the elections behind us and the holidays coming fast, there have been a flurry of advocacy-related meetings as the BATC team prepares for a busy 2017 RRP Lead Paint Rule Advisory Committee Concludes
BATC staff and attorney/Public Policy Committee member Bill Gschwind participated in the MN Dept of Health’s advisory committee about assuming custody of the Federal RRP Lead Paint Rule. The original draft contained some provisions that appear to expand the rule to include pre-cleaning and other abatement-like provisions that expand beyond the original intent of the RRP rule, which held the contractor responsible for cleaning up lead debris and dust related to the project. BATC has expressed these concerns to the MDH, which will now edit and update the rule. BATC will continue to be engaged in this process to ensure that bringing the rule to MN does not unnecessarily increase the costs of projects. The next draft of the rule for BATC review is expected in January 2017. Meetings with Legislative
Leadership
BATC has been working with the MN Association of Realtors on a comprehensive homeownership initiative that promotes government efficiency and housing affordability for all. In our meetings over the past two weeks with leadership in both the MN House and Senate, we have had great discussions about the homeownership initiative. We are pleased with the early interest in elevating our housing agenda on the list of legislative priorities. Look for a formal announcement of the effort in the coming weeks. BATC Meets with DLI Leadership
BATC staff held a productive meeting with State Building Official Scott McClellan and DLI Assistant Commissioner Jessica Looman last week. We covered upcoming legislative issues likely to be debated in the 2017 session, and shared our coalition work relating to workforce and labor issues impacting all segments of the industry. We were pleased to learn of DLI’s commitment to an inclusive and transparent code development process, which will begin in 2017.
