Gabrielle now goes on an extended holiday but will make a brief return in late November to continue the handover process. A defining quality of our school, often mentioned by past, present and prospective families, is its very active, engaged and welcoming community. That level of engagement has and continues to result in many, well attended, social events on both a large scale, such as Fathers’ Day Breakfast and Grandparents Day and smaller, class and year–level gatherings. They all put energy into the school which results in happier parents, positive children who get the benefit of, not just all the love and positivity, but also the many programs that are totally reliant on volunteers for their survival. Programs such as: PMP, class rosters, Art class rosters, sports carnivals, Book Club, LAP, Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden (both gardening and cooking), Netball and Basketball clubs and the Canteen. I am particularly fond of the canteen’s pizza offerings. Made from scratch each day, with the freshest of ingredients, by loving and practised hands, it is without fail, scrumptious. But so are the muffins, wraps sandwhiches and EVERYTHING! Oh, how a good many students and myself are going to miss it all if the canteen has to reduce its services or even closes. Think of the joy a child feels when he/she sees his parents or grandparent behind the counter. That’s my Mum!! Sadly, all this may become a thing of the past if there are not more volunteers who reliably turn up to help out. The food on offer is certified healthy, is tasty and very reasonably priced – our financial aim is to break even across the year. God bless Canteen News The canteen cannot operate without the assistance of volunteers so if you would like to help out and get to know how we work, we would love to have you join our roster - whether it is a few hours, once a month or once a term, we are always grateful for any amount of time. Please contact Peta Taylor on 0419 260 832 if you like to go on the roster and see the joy on your child's face when they visit. By supporting the canteen, you ensure the viability of this service is available for our OLG Community. ART NEWS MAKE ART – IT’S GOOD FOR YOU! Angelico Art Exhibition This year, we again won two awards. I’d like to congratulate Maisie Brown in Year Three and Jackson Rose in Year One. Well done! One of the judges, Mikaela Castledine, gave an inspirational speech that I’d like to share with you. Some of you may be familiar with Mikaela’s work. She has won many art prizes including the 2016 Sculpture Inside award at Sculpture by the Sea Cottesloe and was the 2018 recipient of the Mandorla Art Prize. Angelico Exhibition Award Ceremony Speech August 2018 - Mikaela Castledine Good evening everyone. I know speeches can often be very long and boring so I am only going to say a couple of things – but they are really important things so listen up. The first is that the most important part about this exhibition is not winning a prize – even though prizes will be awarded. The most important thing about this exhibition is not even participating in it – although there will be certificates for participation. The most important thing about this exhibition is that people, whether they sent that work in or not, are making art. I have won a few art prizes over my career but I have “not won” way more than I have won and what I have learnt through the process is that regardless of winning or not winning I need to get up in the morning and go back to work making art. Humans are creative beings we need to be creative to be good human beings, We need to learn to be creative in order to be good students, good teachers, good doctors, good lawyers, good sales people, good parents, good chefs, good nurses, good builders, good sports people and so on. And the way we learn to be creative is to make art. Art is how we train ourselves to be creative thinkers – it is the most important thing we do at school. We can learn letters and numbers and facts and figures but if we don't learn to be creative we won’t know what to do with those things that is different from what everyone else has done with those things in the past. If we can’t be creative then a future that is different from the past doesn't exist. Art is like the most fantastic computer game ever designed, there are hundreds of levels and thousands of challenges at every level and if you played it every day from now until the end of your life you would never, ever, ever get to the end. It is an inexhaustible, never ending supply of entertainment, engagement and fulfillment, doing it is addictive, frustrating, difficult, soothing, satisfying. It will ruin your eyesight and damage your posture! You will struggle, cry, get cross, throw things, laugh, connect, make friends, learn and if you let it, the process of making art will always, always, always make you happy. So if you won a prize this evening - fantastic, do some more art tomorrow. If you didn't win a prize this evening, fantastic make some more art tomorrow. It doesn't matter if you think you are good at it, it doesn't even matter if you want to be or end up being an artist. When you make art you learn to push yourselves, to try new things, to practise your skills, to do the things you are good at and more importantly notice the things you are not good at and do them more. So here is the punch line - Make art – it’s good for you! Grandparent’s Day Art Exhibition Grandparent’s Day Art Exhibition Friday 7th September, 3.00pm – 5.30pm. For schools, social media connects students, parents, teachers, and the school itself. It does this by sharing recent activities that the children and teachers have been participating in. Social media can also help spread school news or certain occasions, such as parent events or sports day. This is really helping children connect with their parents more too, creating conversations between them about work that has been posted by the school. We have had a social presence on facebook for over two years and have recently added Twitter and Instagram to reach all demographics. We acknowledge the original custodians of this land, the Nyungar people, and show our respect for their ancestors and traditions. Our Lady of Grace School |
