Through our Environment and Liveability Strategy, council is committed to supporting waterways and wetlands that are healthy, resilient to change and valued by our community. Supporting change through innovative partnerships like Blue Heart, Sunshine Coast Council, the Queensland Government’s Department of Environment and Science and the local water and sewerage services provider, Unitywater, have committed to work together in the Maroochy Catchment to optimise opportunities in a transitioning landscape. The Blue Heart is a flagship project. This is the first time a local council, a state government and a utility have come together to protect and enhance a dedicated area for conservation, flood mitigation and recreation purposes. The Blue Heart is an area of more than 5000 hectares within the Maroochy River floodplain on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, that contains important environmental features and acts as a critical flood storage area to protect the catchment from flood impacts. It’s an area where effective land and water management will proactively respond to a transitioning landscape, whilst delivering a variety of integrated environmental, social and economic outcomes. These include ongoing agricultural activities and opportunities for conservation, water quality nutrient and vegetation offsetting, carbon farming and recreation. The initial study area includes approximately 1200 hectares already owned by Sunshine Coast Council, Department of Environment and Science and Unitywater. The Blue Heart partners hope to work with local residents and landholders within the Blue Heart, so they may adopt new land management practices that build future economic and environmental resilience, while retaining a focus on flood hazard management.
