Vaginal Electrical Stimulation Could Help Women with Sexual Dysfunction

Turkish researchers report that vaginal electrical stimulation (VES) might be effective in treating female sexual dysfunction.

However, more research is needed, they said.

VES uses a low-voltage electrical current delivered through a sensor in the vagina. The current makes the pelvic floor muscles contract.

Past studies have shown that VES can improve sexual function in women with pelvic floor disorders. In this study, the researchers focused on women without any problems with their pelvic floor.

Fifty-four women with a mean age of 39.6 years participated in the study. Forty-two women completed it. All of the women had some degree of sexual dysfunction.

At baseline, they completed the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). The researchers also evaluated the women's pelvic floor function.

Next, the women were divided into two groups. One group received one VES treatment weekly for eight weeks. The other received a placebo treatment.

At the end of the treatment period, the women again completed the FSFI. Both groups had higher overall scores, indicating better sexual function. They also had gains in the desire, arousal, and orgasm domains of the FSFI. The VES group also had gains in satisfaction.

Neither group had significant changes in the pain or lubrication domains.

Given the general similarity of the results, the research concluded that VES may not necessarily be effective as a monotherapy for female sexual dysfunction. However, it might be effective in conjunction with other pelvic floor physical therapy techniques.

The study was published online last month in The Journal of Sexual Medicine. Please click here for more details.
