Cairns Regional Council e-news - Volume 11, 28 January 2016

Take a look behind the curtain

As the curtain prepares to fall on the Cairns Civic Theatre, residents are invited to be part of the building’s final chapter with a one-off, free public event. Members of the public will be welcomed backstage to tour a full-scale production, prior to Phantom of the Opera’s closing night this Saturday 30 January. This will be the theatre’s last hurrah, as plans progress for the all-new Cairns Performing Arts Centre to be built on the site. Cairns Regional Council, in conjunction with the Cairns Choral Society, will throw open the doors to the Civic Theatre from 10am to 1pm, showcasing the inner workings of the most complex amateur show ever performed at the theatre. Along with up-close access to props, costumes and sets, guests will be able to interact with cast members, ushers, theatre professionals and performers.

New Local Laws adopted

A new suite of Local Laws has been adopted by Cairns Regional Council and will take effect from 1 March. Drawing on extensive public consultation, including a major survey conducted in 2014, the new Local Laws address identified issues in the community, particularly relating to animal management and responsible pet ownership. A key change is the requirement for domestic cats to be registered from July. Lifetime registration will be offered and cats will not be required to wear registration tags, but will have to have to be microchipped. The new Local Laws also formalise a range of existing policy positions, such as prohibiting glass on the Cairns Esplanade and smoking at public transport waiting points; and give council officers power to confiscate and tip out alcohol in public areas. All existing and new Local Laws can be viewed on Council’s website.
