Dr Shane Kelly takes the helm at Mater

The newly appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Mater Health Services Brisbane, Dr Shane Kelly, officially took the reins of the organisation at the beginning of this month.

Taking over from Dr John O’Donnell, who retired from the position of CEO after 14 years, Dr Kelly joins Mater at a pivotal time, following the transition of Mater Children’s Hospital to Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, the re-purposing of the vacated capacity and with the new Mater Private Hospital Springfield due to open late in 2015.

With a senior health management career spanning more than two decades, Dr Kelly said he was delighted to have the opportunity to lead Mater Health Services into the future.

“I am excited to be joining Mater at such a key time in the organisation’s history. It’s a privilege to be working with the Mater Board and Executive team to build on the organisation’s strategic direction. It's a wonderful opportunity” Dr Kelly said.

“I am looking forward to working with the team to deliver exceptional outcomes for the Queensland community.”

SLQ State of Affairs public policy lecture series
"We need to talk about tax"

The State Library of Queensland is proud to announce their second State of Affairs event in Brisbane, in partnership with the Grattan Institute.

Few people like talking about tax. Even fewer like paying it. But taxes are what we pay for civilised society – although we haven’t been paying as much tax as Australian governments have been spending. And how we pay tax makes a big difference to our prosperity.

Tax might sound technical, but it affects everyone’s hip pocket directly, and how our society works. This State of Affairs event will discuss the key questions in Australian tax reform, and show how they raise fundamental issues about what sort of society we want to be.

The Connection

The Prop House
Celebrating 20 years!!

Name and position?
Jano Dawes, Owner and Director

Tell us about your business/organisation?
We have 2 brands under the one umbrella company: The Prop House. Together we are boutique, specialised, customer focussed and incredibly creative.

The Prop House is Brisbane’s favourite event styling and prop Hire Company.

VM+ is our new brand that focusses solely on visual merchandising and Christmas – both corporate and domestic.

What is your role at your organisation?
As owner and director I drive the ship; lead my fabulous team in the right direction. My days vary a lot and can include client meetings, installations, designing marketing collateral, staff liaison, buying new product (and this can ALL be in one day).

What are your key skills and responsibilities?
I think I am a good leader and a good listener. When a client tells me what they want I listen and then ensure that we deliver. When a staff member has an issue that needs attending, I will do my best to sort it. I can be tough… but only when I have to be!

How many people work at your business?
I have a wonderful team of ten core staff but over the busy Christmas installation period we expand out to about 70 including production, installers, riggers and sales staff. My team is everything to me and to the company – without a great team, The Prop House is nothing!

What is your favourite place in the precinct?
I have to say the Spaghetti House trattoria – they do THE most amazing pasta with clams (which is my all time favourite).

What do you want BSB members to know about you or your business?
That they are welcome any day of the week to come inside. Many people think that we are only for corporate customers or by appointment. We would love every member of BSB to come in and have a look around. If you are thinking of having a party at home and want to style it up a bit, The Prop House is the place to help.

What is something people wouldn’t know about your business?
That we designed and manufactured and we install each year the beautiful Christmas decorations seen in the Queen Street Mall. And that these were designed specifically to bring the magic of Christmas back to Brisbane.

What has recently happened at your organisation?
The Prop House has just turned 20. I established the company in 1995 and have been running it ever since. We have launched some of Brisbane’s icons like Northlakes, Portside Wharf and Emporium and created some of Brisbane’s most talked about events over the past 20 years.

What have you learnt lately?
That I need to slow down a bit. I recently got really sick with the flu due to working too hard. Not sure if I will change though!

What do you hope to achieve in your industry?
Another 20 years… maybe?

What inspires you?
My 3 children – every single day.

What are your words of wisdom?
Life is not a dress rehearsal, don’t waste it - be happy.
