Epiphany Celebration at School

The Feast of the Epiphany, or the Three Magi, is to be celebrated at school on Friday, January 5th, with Fr. Grecco blessing our classrooms, children, and staff.

The custom in Germany is a children’s festival from January 1 to January 6 (Three Kings Day). After a service at church, the children go from house to house to gather offerings for poor children in poor countries. They are dressed as the three kings and carry sticks with stars on the top. At the homes they sing songs and recite messages of Christmas. At each house they paint the letters "20+CMB+18," which stand for the Latin Christus Mansionem Benedicat (Christ bless this house). At the same time, the letters are the first letters of the names of the wise men: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar.

We continue this tradition by having the children gather in the halls and sing carols while the priest moves from room to room blessing everyone and the classrooms that are in daily use.

Notes from the Office

Cancellations and Delays
Sacred Heart follows the Pittsburgh Public Schools decision for delays and cancellations.  Check WTAE, WPXI, and KDKA for listings. An Option C alert will also be sent by phone and email. School arrival time should be 10:00 a.m.

Remember that on two hour delay days, if you are on lunch duty, school lunch begins 30 minutes later.  Report to the cafeteria at 11:40 at the latest. Students will be in their homerooms for indoor recess. Parents should walk from room to room and monitor the children. Students should use indoor voices, stay in their rooms, have no food or drink, and request permission for restroom or locker visits.

Tuition Payment Due
If you pay your tuition by semester, your second payment is due January 15, 2018.  If you chose to use the SMART tuition plan, please ensure those accounts are up to date as well.  Contact Laura Abinader  at the Parish Tuition Office for your current balance or check your SMART account on-line.

Parent Teacher Conferences
The monthly envelope contains a Parent-Teacher Conference Form.  This conference is optional, and can be scheduled with any one of your child’s teachers.  Please return the form by January 22 if you would like to schedule a conference on February 8 or 9. Check the form for times. Report cards will go home on Wednesday, January 31st  with your child. Please ask your child for the report card.

Returning to Sacred Heart
Please return the  ”Are You Returning to Sacred Heart?” form to the school office by January 19. One form is required per child. The information is essential to planning for the next school year.

Financial Aid
FACTS financial aid forms will be available soon. Both Catholic and non-Catholic families can apply for financial aid for the 2018-19 school year. The deadline is March 15, 2018. Updates will be provided via Option C alerts.

Scrap Paper
The school is in need of one sided scrap paper.  Please consider Sacred Heart if your business is upgrading their stationery or logo. We will happily repurpose it. You can drop off the paper at the school office. Thanks for your help!

Catholic Schools Week

Catholic Schools Week will be from Sunday, January 28 through Saturday, February 2. The national theme for 2018 is Learn...Serve…Lead...Succeed

We invite all families to attend the 9:30 a.m. parish Mass on Sunday, January 28 to celebrate the many gifts God has given to Sacred Heart School; our children, parents, teachers, and parishioners. The Mass will be followed by a festive family brunch in the cafeteria. The registration form can be found in the monthly envelope.

A hard copy for events scheduled for the week will follow.

Box Tops update

Thank you so much for all of the Box Tops you have been sending into the school office.  In November, we received a check for over $500!  That money is used for various classroom and playground materials, and field trips.  The next submission date will be in March. Let's try to make it to $1000 this year!

A few reminders:

  • Please remember to check the expiration dates.  We cannot submit Box Tops if they are expired.
  • Box Tops do not need to be trimmed perfectly. You can snip 'em or rip 'em, just make sure the expiration date and product code are both visible (ZIP, GM, etc.)
  • You can send them to school on one of our fun collection sheets or secured in a baggie or envelope.
  • Don't forget to ask family and friends for their help collecting!
  • Check out www.boxtops4education.com or Like Box Tops for Education on Facebook for more information.

Thank you for helping make our school's Box Tops program a success!

Boys volleyball

For the first time in several years, Sacred Heart will be participating in Diocesan boys volleyball. All boys in 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th grades are encouraged to attend volleyball open gyms on Sundays from 1:00-2:30.  If you can jump, move from side to side and back and forth, consider playing this easy to learn and really fun sport. Practices will begin as basketball season comes to an end. The spring volleyball season is a short 7 weeks with an additional two weeks for playoffs. Give it a try - you won't be sorry!

January food: Rice-a-roni

In conjunction with Sacred Heart Parish, the school will collect Rice-a-roni to be contributed to the food bank run by the East End Cooperative Ministry.

Each month, the Christian Leadership Team members encourage all of us to contribute a different featured food to share with our neighbors in need. Thank you for your support.
