Kidney Removal and ED
Men who have a radical nephrectomy (complete kidney removal) are more likely to develop erectile dysfunction (ED) after surgery than those who have a partial nephrectomy (partial kidney removal).
American researchers published these findings in the British Journal of Urology International in July.
Using the International Index of Erectile Function, the researchers assessed pre- and post-operative erectile function in two groups of men. One group underwent a radical nephrectomy; the other had partial kidney removal.
About 30% of the radical nephrectomy participants developed erectile dysfunction. For those who had a partial nephrectomy, this rate was 10%.
Overall, the researchers concluded that men who have a radical nephrectomy are 3.5 times more likely to develop ED than their counterparts who have a partial nephrectomy.
