Dear Gateway Community, Our schools have slowly emptied over the past several weeks: first it was our students celebrating the end of finals and the school year, then teachers who wrapped up collaborative meetings and classroom clean up. While the hallways might be quiet, many of our educators spend their summers in trainings and certification programs, working through reading lists, and developing their plans for next school year. We’re excited to share more about our teachers' summer plans in this edition of The Gate. In early June I spoke at the Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP) graduation, and it got me thinking about what it means to be a teacher today. Sometimes as a teacher the magnitude of what we are trying to accomplish and all the barriers to success can get a little overwhelming. We aren’t just trying to help students get into college; we are trying to change the patterns of achievement in society. We aren’t just trying to empower individual young people; we are trying to change the world. From the college preparatory curriculum to supporting every type of learner, our Gateway families, faculty and staff, community partners, and local advocates and allies are all committed to changing the world with us. When 100% of our seniors graduate from high school and have post-secondary plans, we know all of the work that goes into making a student successful was worth it. Thank you for being part of the Gateway community this school year. We’ll be back with Gateway news and updates in the fall! Happy summer, Sharon Olken

Gateway Staff Work Hard, Play Hard Over Summer Break Summer vacation is the envy of non-teachers the world over, but for Gateway teachers the summer months are much more than a chance to lounge poolside. You’ll likely find them spending much of their break in a classroom -- perhaps in the role of a student, or mentoring peers. Summer professional development allows Gateway teachers to hone their skills, collaborate with colleagues they might not meet otherwise, and reconnect with their passion for the teaching profession. Great Things in Store for BGCSF’s Third Year at Gateway Spend a little time on either Gateway campus and you’re sure to notice the friendly folks in blue polos in our halls and among our students. They’re our friends from The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco (BGCSF), who partner with Gateway staff to ensure that each student is benefitting from relationships with caring adults and accessing the support they need to thrive in and out of the classroom. Fond Farewells and Warm Welcomes: Board of Trustees Transitions After more than 20 years of serving Gateway, Founder and Trustee Suzanne Schutte is stepping down from Gateway’s Board of Trustees to spend time with her family. In 1997, Suzanne and Gateway’s six other founding parents sat around a kitchen table and imagined a school that could be a laboratory, where research about learning and teaching could be implemented and honed into practices that could be shared with other schools.
